Default ATIS - Internet Access

I am contracting with the FAA and researching if ATIS information can be retrieved via the net. Does anyone know if this is possible, maybe for free or through some third party option? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

One of the ATC people might know better, but there are a number of systems used to handle ATIS broadcasts and I am not sure all of them are transcribed for digital dissemination via FMS or other means, except at the very largest airports. Metars are already provided as you know. Another thing to think about, particularly if you are using the data for flight planning purposes and want the proper legal foundation for using it, is a transcription service needs to be FAA approved using the "QICP" system (Qualified Internet Communications Provider). This can be seen on Aviationweather.gov and some others like DUATS and FlightPlan.com, but they are not the full ATIS broadcasts containing local airport info you would seem to require.

This is probably not very helpful, but 2-3 days ago, I was getting a checkout from a CFI in an A/C the flight school has, and he picked up the ATIS on his iPhone, and it came over voice instead of screen print. He had one touch dialing, so I don't know what # he dialed. I didn't think to ask him how he did it. Wish I had'a now. Hope this helps.

Not all airports have ATIS phone numbers (many do however), METARS are available for all airports that report weather and widely available as a data feed.

I don't know of any free places, but FlightWise (formerly FBOWeb) is the only place that I know of. It's fee based.

Flightwise free flight tracker - flight tracking, planning, maps, aeronautical and aviation information

Are people talking about METARs or ATIS, because it sounds like there may be some confusion here and folks are thinking METARs...

From my understanding the actual ATIS text feeds (which indicate metars, runways, remarks, etc) you have to get via the FAA or participating agencies they're partnered with (and it's not free, either).

ATIS over the internet sounds like a good idea but I don't think it will happen.

The FAA spent something like 10 billion on a study and the feel the internet is nothing but a fad and they feel it is not worth investing any further resources.
ALPA of course agrees with the FAA but they are thinking of charging each member $50 to study the idea further..

At least thats the rumor I heard
