Indy 500(R) Champion Dan Wheldon Helps Airline Cross the Finish Line for First Flight

ORLANDO, Fla., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI - News), today launched new, daily nonstop service from Richmond International Airport to Atlanta and Philadelphia, further expanding the low-fare carrier's reach to 47 cities nationwide. To celebrate the completion of its newest route, AirTran Airways teamed up with Indy 500® Champion Dan Wheldon to hold an inaugural event at Richmond International Airport this afternoon.
The highlight of the event came as the driver for the Andretti Green Racing team marshaled the ceremonial first AirTran Airways' flight into Richmond International Airport. To signify the end of high fares in Richmond, the racing star waved the plane across the finish line at the gate with the official checkered flag that will be used in Saturday's IndyCar race at Richmond International Raceway.

AirTran Airways is an associate sponsor of the Andretti Green Racing team. To commemorate its partnership with the IndyCar team, the low fare airline named Wheldon an honorary AirTran Airways Captain and presented him with a ceremonial key to the airline's fleet.

On hand for the inaugural event were AirTran Airways' Vice President of Planning Kevin Healy, Capital Region Airport Commission Chair James B. Donati and representatives from the Richmond business community.

"We are pleased to offer Richmond-area residents a low-fare, high-quality option for travel to destinations across the United States," said Kevin Healy, AirTran Airways' vice president of planning. "For years this market has been a victim of some of the highest fares in the country, and we're excited to bring relief in the form of affordable service to the Capital Region Area."

Capital Region Airport Commission Chair James B. Donati expressed his excitement by stating, "AirTran Airways' arrival at Richmond International Airport marks the day that local travelers will have a convenient choice for everyday affordable fares and service among the best in the industry to more than 40 of our most important destinations."

U.S. Congressman Eric Cantor welcomed AirTran Airways to Richmond, "AirTran Airways' decision to begin operating out of Richmond today could not have come at a better time. Their arrival will contribute to the booming economy we are experiencing while helping families save money on ticket prices. AirTran Airways' arrival at RIC also gives employers another incentive to relocate their businesses to the Richmond area. I am looking forward to flying AirTran Airways."
