Pilots in flight
 

So what exactly do commercial pilots do in the middle of a flight. Other than listening to ATC and adjusting the autopilot of course. Read? Laptop? Pilots can't sleep in the US right, only on international flights?

They examine the overhead panel, eat from the first class menu, there's the mandatory discussion about the chief pilot, and take turns to see who can get better fuel economy.

FWIW, I've been on some military transports and it goes like this... Take turns reading the newspaper, complain about the wife's spending, heat up a pizza in the oven, etc...

Read their manuals.

Review FOM revisions, monitor destination & alt. weather, maintain fire/engine fail/medical diversion planning, calculate best performance/fuel savings options, review NOTAMS, review & adjust next let's flight planning, traffic watch, update dispatch, monitor passenger comfort, calculate landing performance, monitor atc arrival rates at destination, fly the airplane.

When cruise only lasts 10 minutes, there isn't much I can do.

No as the supervisor I just watch the other guy do that. I'm to busy doing my yoga and pilates.

Some guys are just too cool to plan ahead or plan for the worst.
