sweaters

ATTN: All rj pilots.

Please, please stop wearing those horribly cheesy RAF looking sweaters with your epaulets.

Thank you

Look, chief. . . Its not my thing. I'm too warm all the time to wear any sweater anyway. However, you should mind your own business, unless you want to be an advocate for all pilots getting rid of their service caps, uniform shirts, and trench overcoats. They are all military dress items. I'm sick of listening to hypocrites. If what they are wearing looks professional and keeps them warm, I say enjoy.

wanttofly 01-29-2012 07:24 AM

Naw, I'm good. Thanks for the input though.

zildjian_zach 01-29-2012 07:50 AM

I guess I'm in the clear since I fly a lowly turboprop. You know what else is kinda gay? Checking out other dudes and dispensing fashion advice. Just sayin'...

rightside02 01-29-2012 07:50 AM

I wear one under my jacket,I never wear just the sweater , it's way too cold wearing the jacket only based up north, I think they are way better than the Wana be neo matrix trench coats that most dtw/msp wear.... Those look like trash in my opinion

BrewMaster 01-29-2012 08:01 AM

How are those worse than the trench coats? Not everyone can afford the $7k leather jackets. At our company, we aren't allowed to wear the epaulettes, but the sweater is approved.

Why are you so militant against them? Because they look "gay" is rediculous. Somebody has some issues.... They usually look cleaner and neater than a stained/wrinkled white shirt anyways. Don't be such a tool. There are bigger problems in the industry.

Why only RJ pilots? You do realize that that style of sweater is prevalent throughout the entire industry and have been around for a while. You also realize that everything on our uniform can trace its origins back to the military.

Your stupid posts have actually just convinced me to go buy a couple of them.

B200 Hawk 01-29-2012 08:29 AM

They are comfortable and warm. Also it comes in handy when the company orders you a jacket that is way too small and makes it impossible to return.

You bring up such a great point umm...**************?

But what if a pilot is gay, then are they allowed to wear them? Also what should straight people wear?

By the way, I am glad you are around to help out newcomers. This industry needs more people: like you. :rolleyes

UnlimitedAkro 01-29-2012 09:01 AM

It's true. The sweater with stripes on the shoulders looks terrible. Most of those guys don't care about their appearance anyway. Just like the ones who wear a ski beanie inside the heated terminal.

Yeah, stop being comfortable, warm when you don't have an APU and its the first flight of the day up in the NE and quit looking professional in your approved, within standards attire! It looks dumb.

Of all of the potential pieces of advice, with everying pilots face these days, an optional, in all likelihood company approved, personal preference uniform item is your power play?

Oh no, the airline fashion police have made another APC appearance! Somebody cue up the "Bad Boys" theme song from Cops when loading this thread.

Talk about the 'pot' calling out the 'kettle' yet again......you have a full industry of people who wear white shirts and either blue or black pants, and a jacket of the same color. That's it. That's practically all the uniform consists of, yet you somehow can find a way to single someone out to criticize? Wow. (I know there are exceptions to the above, like B6 and VX).

Slaves to style indeed.

captain152 01-29-2012 11:08 AM

Really??? I mean... REALLY?!?!?! THIS is your idea of advice for new hires???

Implying they're gay if they wear a sweater to keep warm when it's below freezing, snowing, and a windchill that feels like knives against their skin?

Dude... Get real.

And OF COURSE this doesn't apply to the guys flying props... Why would ANYONE ever think that we get cold...

Stellar post

todd1200 01-29-2012 11:08 AM

For sure! Like totally Becky! I can't, like, believe that anyone would wear those things! Gross! Did you see what Greg wore to the mall last week?! It was soooo last year!

AKASHA 01-29-2012 11:17 AM

If you're gonna wear that ridiculous hat, you might as well put on a sweater.

He would never say it to anyones face so he has to hide behind a computer screen. Well done, you are setting a great example for the newcomers, way to be professional...

FastDEW 01-29-2012 02:40 PM

Is this serious!?! Lol

Unreal............ How about offering advice on how to move to mainline, improve pay and fly safe?

Those damn sweaters get you every time.... Wow, just wow!

I wear the said trench coat. I agree it looks terrible. However, it keeps me warm and dry. Especially on walk around in the north. It usually is draped over my luggage when walking through the terminal though.

Me too! And I think I'll get some RAF wings to wear on it as well.

captain152 01-29-2012 03:52 PM

Hahaha!! Too funny!! Nice touch!

zondaracer 01-30-2012 01:59 AM

Haha and don't forget to add the RAF white flying gloves to match the wings.

Laxrox43 01-30-2012 03:18 AM

You know what really grids my gears? People who argue about stuff that nobody cares about...seriously guys...are we really arguing over a SWEATER?! Oh, and why are you all throwing the "gay" insult around. Not professional. That crap needs to stop!

...and that is what grinds my gears...

Paok 01-30-2012 03:31 AM

I think the leather jackets look quite silly with a shirt, tie and dress pants .Leave those to the military, but everyone loves them.

ha! I wear one in LA, with no jacket and epaulets, just to annoy people like you. If it makes you feel any better I get a lot of complements and other pilots asking where to order one. I got mine from the stopover store if anyone is wondering!

DrangonStar45 01-30-2012 11:28 AM

Like OMG, like those sweaters are like soo 20th century? (in a teenage girl's voice)

zondaracer 01-30-2012 01:00 PM

To be honest I think the sweater looks good, and you see them at flying schools and GA hangars all across Europe. It is also warm.

Actually, the airline pilot uniform traces its origins back to commercial maritime uniforms. There was a time when airlines were competing with ocean crossing passenger ship traffic and because of this, the airlines chose that style of uniform for marketing and image.

Now, I suppose an argument could be made that the commercial maritime uniforms have military roots, but the jury is still out. There are accounts of some pre naval merchant and exploration ships' crews that had a semblance of a uniform that indicated their position as to make it easier to bark out orders to configure all those sails. I'm a geek. That is all. Carry on.:o

DAL uniforms are almost identical to US Navy uniforms.

Nevertheless, your observation doesn't trump the history of airline pilot uniforms. It could easily be that the current US Navy's dress uniform design have roots in civilian maritime uniforms.
