Can an airline pilot live in NYC?

Two of the biggest goals in my life are to become an airline pilot and live in New York City. I've been thinking though, how a person would get to and from JFK if they lived on Manhattan. Owning a car is not practical there. Any pilots out there who live in NYC care to share how you commute? It just seems odd to me to take a subway train in a full pilot uniform, with your luggage, to the airport every time.

As a native New Yorker, albeit a resident of Long Island and raised in Westchester, I can tell you that your commute to JFK from Manhattan would be the least of your problems. Simply take the LIRR to Jamaica (Queens) and then get the airtrain to JFK. The issue with living in NYC and Manhattan in particular is whether you could afford to on anything less than legacy widebody pay or perhaps FDX, UPS or ABX. It is rediculously expensive to live in New York. If its a dream of yours, good luck, but I don't recommend it.

All the Flight Attendants live in Queens. Kew Gardens. They call it Crew Gardens. If you are single a fun time can be had there.

Thanks for the advice. NYC is something I had wanted for a long time, until a family friend from San Diego filled me in on what I'm missing in SoCal. California sounds like a much better place. I've lived in Georgia my whole life, and while it was a great place to grow up, it's just boring now. SoCal has the best of both worlds it seems, because you have all the benefits of a world class city(LA) and you can still own a car.

Wow! The weather is better but if there is one place in North America you could go that is more expensive than N.Y. San Deigo is it! Good luck Buddy!:)

Until somebody carjacks or steals it. Seriously, San Diego is awesome. Lots of places to live depending on what you want to spend. I would recommend San Diego over LA area. And then there are those California girls. ;)

You wouldn't like LA. Except for the extremely rich areas, LA is turning into Mexico. San Diego, on the other hand, is fantastic. Cleaner, less crowded, more compact.
