A couple of Louisiana ANG pilots once attended the British Open in flight suits -- so magnificently inappropriate that it rose above toolishness to become a legend of the Coonass Militia.

When my kid gets old enough to play soccer, I'm going to wear my uniform (heck, I might even put the hat on) to a game just to watch the people on this thread screw themselves into the ceiling out of anger.

If you get so upset about something like that, you might be the tool...

the people here who are throwing a fit about people wearing their tie and epaulets in public are the tools. Who cares? its not that someone is trying to draw attention its just that they didnt really even think twice or give a **** about taking half there uniform off just cause they have to stop at sons/daughters sports event or a store on the way to or from work. are we supposed to be ashamed of our uniforms? is the off duty police officer, firefighter, military personnel, doctor, or anyone wearing scrubs a tool to because they went out in public in their uniform before going home and taking it off??? I put my epaulets on my shirt before i put the shirt on. You know why????? cause its a hell of a lot easier that way.

I agree. I also think the cop, the pilot, the doctor, and me, all wear our stuff because we earned it. I'm proud of it AND I can poke a little fun at myself in the process. It is certainly toolish to go out of your way to wear it, but come to think of it, it would be toolish to go out of your way not to be seen with it. And if it's on, I'm proud of it, because it's part of who I am.

My kids love the damned thing, come to think of it, and so does my wife. I'm happy this is so. In my jacket pocket is the text of my father's eulogy. He was sure proud to see me in it, and so I figured it was a fitting thing to do.

You know why I wear or don't wear the uniform picking up one of the kids after a trip?

Because it's mine to wear or not wear.

I think the tool thread is beginning to implode upon itself.

+1. Who gives a crap? OMG, that guy didn't take off his epaulets...he must be a tool! I guess I just don't live under the impression that non-pilots will instantly be impressed with me because I happen to be a pilot...it's just another job, that happens to wear stupid uniforms.

EDIT: Ok, going to a soccer game...ya you can take off all your flair. Riding home on a motorcycle...not a big deal.

He may be TOTD material to you, but I imagine he's DadOTD to his kid...or not, tough to tell with teenagers. :-)

When I see a guy walking around in his uniform, sans flair, I think "What kind of a tool is that ashamed of his job?"

The real tools are the guys who can't accept that their bodies have changed with time. Buy some clothes that fit.
