Because they're afraid it might give the Feds an "idea".

WesternSkies 05-29-2017 11:48 PM

Medical exams will change and then the age limit will be pushed back if not repealed.
This will actually clear out many current guys younger than 65 who have an "in" with their AME.

YAWN... Nothing to see here, move along... Let's review "Civics 101" - FAA does NOT have the authority to just "decide" to change the retirement age. Congress must pass a bill, which the President signs to become law/statute. The new law then directs the agency to amend the regulation.

That's the cartoon version.

Reality however...

The congressional mechanisms (staff & committees) which write and amend laws related to government functions typically rely on the relevant federal agency(s) to make recommendations, and in fact many such laws have their origins in the federal bureaucracy, not congress.

Unless there is a high-visibility political issue, or somebody really has a bug up their butt, congress will probably go with FAA recommendations on something like this. Also possible that special interests (unions & airlines) have an influence as well.

In the case of age 67...it would probably pass unless airlines are opposed, or there is solid science showing an exponential jump in risk between 65 and 67, or there's a high profile crash caused by a geriatric pilot. Just need somebody (like ATA) to jumpstart the process. Won't be too long now. ALPA won't be able to do much, since they probably don't have enough science to back their case. Actually ALPA knows which side of their bread is buttered, and it's the senior wide-body captain side.

I'd argue ICAO Annex 1 would have to raise the retirement age before the FAA and Congress attempted it.

That is the bottom line.

True for international ops. But the US has plenty of domestic ops, and could easily make bilateral/multilateral arrangements with other North American countries to allow ops there as well.

Whether ICAO goes for it would probably depend on the global pilot shortage, which by all accounts is going to be worse and last longer than the one in the US.
