I do my best to look good in uniform but..
I always get a kick out of flying with the old school gentleman. Classic, sharp looking, pressed uniform, mustache and hat while working. You head out to dinner.. Airline pilot poster guy is now wearing a white tshirt tucked into stonewashed mom jeans with the huge white tennis shoes.

I feel like saying "What happened to you?"

Flying is a horrible experience these days, and in terms of purchasing power, our pay has been cut 70%. So what exactly is there to love about us?

Why is the type of pilot described by the OP the ideal? Back in the day pilots may have looked like central casting sent them over but that was also the days of "The Captain is always right" and perfectly good airplanes flying into mountains because of egos.

Stop lamenting about the so called good old days when the pilot aura made it easier for the ego to be stroked. Flight attendants are not there to be ogled like some stag party...that is the same kind of attitude that makes it easier to view women as things and not people and eventually permits some men in society to be Ray Rice or Ray McDonald. (Yes I know about Hope Solo but lets look at the percentages here)

Fact is the airplane doesn't know what a pilot looks like or who they voted for. Its not going to get there any faster or safer with a good looking, tall square-jawed pilot than it will someone with someone the OP characterizes as having a lesser appearance.

How about we strive for a safe, competent and professional pilot corps first. If some want to hold a beauty pageant...go fly for Donald Trump.
