Observation of the day
Ok as I'm bored setting in ord watching the circus from the delays, after watching probably 10 FO' s scurry around I've noticed something, airline pilots are no longer cool looking lolo I mean at what point in aviation history did the standard for an airline pilot change from good looking square jawed manly men to these goofy looking gangly guys that look more like mr. Burns from the Simpsons and less like Robert Redford ! 20 plus years ago the flight attendants and women wanted to be with us and the guys wanted to be with us ! Now you tell someone at a bar your a pilot they look at us like a bus driver, I mean when was the last time you gave a kid a set of wings ! Me I blame Emory riddle and places like that, the old days kit was ex fighter pilots, now it's nerdy trust fund baby's that couldn't pick up a girl if they had to lol
But keep in mind I'm still the old school cool guy, we'll at least that's what I tell myself :) |
Cool story bro.

Aviation has always been a nerd's game. Even fighter pilots are nerds. I know many of them.

Whats wrong with pleated pants?

I also blame the regional airlines, first they took the pay away, then they took the women ! I'm still up in the air to which is worse lol

My opinion is airline travel used to be somewhat of a privileged way of travelling. Once they started making it just another means of mass transit and taking away amenities such as leg space and free meals, and at the same time gouging passengers on ticket prices, the glamour of travelling by air just eroded. So the public's view on pilots as just glorified bus drivers perpetuated. If you look at other countries where air travel is still a privilege, their pilots are still looked up to and respected.
At the same time, the opportunities to become a pilot in other countries is a lot more difficult due to financial or social barriers. I've heard in certain Asian countries, for example, it would be neigh impossible for an aspiring pilot to attend flight school unless they came from a wealthy or privileged background. However, in the States, any kid who can get a cosigner for a Sallie Mae loan can fart their way through a pilot mill a la ATP flight school, can end up in the right seat of a jet. Think back to when you started flight training and saw some of the jackasses in your class who you never would imagine pass their commercial checkride, let alone become the pilot of a regional jet. |
