The Good Old Days

Vintage airline posters that promised glamorous holidays to London, Hawaii and Haiti | Daily Mail Online

Looking at these vintage posters brings tears to my eyes. So many great airlines all gone.

I've told this story before, but I'll tell it again. My first ever flight was on Northwest Orient. I still have the metal cutlery my father appropriated from the meal service on that flight across the Pacific.

Since that flight, I have been to all the cities advertised on those posters, except Haiti. I miss Pan Am, TWA and Continental. They were so glamorous. I dressed up for it. Today, people use a garbage bag as a carry on and wear flip flops.

So sad.

I recall picking up my long ago grandmother at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta in the mid-70s. She always dressed like a politician when traveling as did most people who used major airports in those days. It was seen as a somewhat classy thing to do. Flight crews were always very well dressed with coats and hats even during the summer.

Ah come on, you were just trying to swipe the 3-ciggie pack that came on the trays.

What....you people don't think the backpack flung over the shoulders is a good look?

Same thing with the ocean liners. I think Cunard tries its best to maintain the old atmosphere, but they are owned by Carnival now.

Maybe they went bankrupt because they had to keep buying new cutlery? :D

Seriously, though, my father-in-law was a pilot with Northwest from the 50s until he retired in 1993 at age 60. Was sad to see the red tails go...

Everyone is, if only rhetorically.

The avg. person today thinks a "pimp" is synonymous with "classy".
