Campers in HNL Employee Parking Lot?
 

Just wondering the feasibility of one using a VW Bus, Truck Camper, or even an RV in the employee lot as a place to hang out while on reserve?

Has anyone at HAL or the various commuters done this?

I know each airport has different regulations about this.

I've never heard about anyone doing that. Not sure if there are any rules against it either. But you would need to run your engine or a generator all of the time, because your vehicle will always be roasting in the parking lot.

Here's the solution to first year pay from the politicians.

Doing the math on First Year pay, COMBINED with no hotel for training...uffdha! I really REALLY want to fly for Hawaiian, my wife and I are looking at the numbers, I honestly don't know if we can swing it. We would be loaning against 401K's, etc, living in a van down by the river...

What are guys doing during training? Cheapest AirBNB was 1700/room for the month. After tax, deductions, etc, essentially our entire paycheck goes to our hotel cost for training/food.

It's not a matter of toughing it out for a year, we have no problem there, I just simply don't know if we can fiscally even do it. (Wife is a full-time Mom). Very tough, not sure how this cookie crumbles.

In the same boat. Considering that the average NH pay at all the other legacies is way more than double what it is at HAL I see it as a huge slap in the face and completely disrespectful. Now is when they need to significantly increase the current first year rate or offer a sign on bonus. Forcing us to cash in what small savings is in the current 401K just to eat for a year. Selling the cars, house and using that money just to afford a place to live for one year. The chump change they are offering now would barely cover the cell phone and medical bills for a family.

I hope they change this soon before they loose all of the potential new hires coming with the most experience. Other airlines value their new hires or want to make sure they can attract the best experience for their airline. I bet there are plenty of guys that would love to live in and work for Hawaiian, but when faced with tough decisions have to chose the airline that will allow them to afford to support their family.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of moving there as well.
When we moved 10 yrs ago it cost $1000 to ship a car from LA and to ship a PODS with all our stuff was about $4000

There is another thread in the Hawaiian section about a guy hired in the summer asking about finding a place to live. You should check it out. But basically it is a little different renting a place in HI rather than the mainland. A lot of places are run by management companies. They treat it like they are selling a house and do showings. On that day a whole bunch of people show up, fill out apps and then the company gets back to who they want to rent to. i remember looking at places and told them I had cash in hand and would take the place today. they said, nope, fill out the app and we will call you. Then throw in that you have to fill in how much you make on the app. They are going to laugh at you when you say you make 2700/month and want to rent their $2000 apartment.
Not trying to bum you out, but i have been there. When I got hired at WP, wife and I moved out there not knowing anything. I thought it would be no big deal to rent an apartment. It was just the 2 of us so all we needed was a basic 1 bedroom. Well I spent ever spare minute and night during ground school looking for a place. (we were staying in a hotel at the time). I got lucky and found a place, when I mentioned I worked at WP the lady said, "Oh, my cousin works there, let me talk to the owner", boom I got a call an hr later saying they would rent to me.
you will definitely need a bunch of money from savings to get through the first year if you are hired. it is really a hit for 2 years, because even though there is a big bump in 2yr pay, you have to recover from all the money you used out of your savings the first yr.
again, not trying to bum you out, but a lot of people who never moved to or lived in Hawaii, don't know the reality of the situation.

With everyone else hiring, you have to ask yourself is it worth the sacrifice to go there.
