Default Shipping Household Goods/Cars

I'm moving to Hawaii and am curious about everyone's experience with or reviews of shipping companies. Any pitfalls or certain companies to avoid? How long does it take for stuff to get from CA to HI? Storage costs per month once it gets there? How difficult is the claims process? How expensive is it in general (how much weight did you ship at what cost)? Did anyone ship from anywhere besides CA? Any crazy rules for shipping a car you wish you would have known beforehand? Any other words of advice are welcome. Thanks!

there are only 3 companies that ship cars to HI. I use Pasha.
If you drop the car yourself in Long Beach, it will be $1050 to ship it. You can not have anything in the car. They will check it.
I shipped stuff using Pods. Definitely the cheapest way. They will drop the pod at your house, you take as long as you want to fill it, then call them they pick it up and will deliver to your place in HI. You can have them store the pod until you are ready for about $225/month. A 16 ft pod cost about $6000 total. Moving companies will be a lot more.

Thanks! How long did it take for the car and the pod to get to HI once it was shipped?

They post their schedule on the web page so if you drop off right before a ship, could be as little as a week, if you just missed the ship could be up to two & half weeks (this is for Oahu, other islands can add considerable time).

If you have FedEx benefits as a 121 Jumpseat reciprocal try that. 75%off.

Done it multiple times both directions, 2 day.

Sell the big stuff. Buy once settled in off Craigslist. Remember people are doing the same thing in the other direction. And not going to spend $6000 on their $500 couch and household crap.

Also the gas in the car needs to be nearly empty.

Good luck.

Unless you have really nice stuff just sell it and buy when you arrive. Just be ready for the incredible increase in what things cost on the islands. Only ship your car if it's fairly new or nice. If you do ship the car it must have 1/4 tank or less for hazmat requirements. There's some paperwork requirements as well. Registration or proof of ownership or something.

Thanks! Could you go into a little more detail about this? I've never worked 121 before. I'm starting with Ohana and applying to HAL when the window opens next month.

if you work for almost any 121 airline, you can show your company ID and get an airline employee discount to ship things at FEDEX. They will give 75% off the price. If you are moving to HI that will only work if you only have a few boxes to ship. If you are moving a family, definitely will not work to move your stuff.

You can call Pods and get a quote for free. They can give you a schedule of when the pod will arrive if you give them dates when you want it picked up at your house.

Moving your stuff is the easy part. Finding a place to live on Oahu is more difficult. See other thread....

Once the car gets there, if there are any issues with the inspection, do they let you take the car to go fix it? Or how does that work? For example, if they say you need new tires, will they let you take the car to a tire shop?

For the safety check, yes. They will tell you any items that need to be fixed before they issue they give you the approval sticker. I have had to buy new wipers once, and new tires a different time in order to pass.

Be aware that matson won't ship your car with any cracks or nicks in your windshield, with some exceptions so check with them if needed.
