Potential 787s instead of A330NEOs?
Looks like Boeing is pitching the 787 hard to Hawaiian:

Or maybe Hawaiian is leveraging one manufacturer against another to extract more benefits - just like they all do in these negotiations... NOBODY pays list price.

How does a E175 compare to a b 717
The 175 carries 70ish pax whereas the 717 is 120 something.
I’m sure you know that but where do you see the cost savings to buy 787s?

I think there is only three options for replacing the 717. The E190's, C-series, or 737-700. The keep it mianline, they will use at least 100 seat jets.
I also think they are only talking to Boeing to get a better price on the A350. I would be happy with either new widebody.

HAL will never see the A350. AB didn’t build the -800, and the others are simply too big. A330NEO -800 maybe, assuming they actually build THAT one. Seeing that HAL is the only remaining order that is questionable. A330-900 again just a touch too big, unless it only runs Haneda, LAX and Vegas.
Have you not considered the possibility that maybe the 787 talks are because the Ivory Tower actually wants to buy 787s? Lord knows there are a lot of 787’s on HAL’s routes (ANZ, JetStar, ANA, etc). They obviously work just fine. If Airbus isn’t building the planes, then.....?
