Boeing displaces Airbus at Hawaiian, wins 787-9 deal; airline cancels A330-800 order
Leeham Co.: Boeing has displaced Airbus at Hawaiian Airlines, winning an order for 787-9s. Hawaiian canceled an order for six A330-800s, the only order on the books for this sub-type.
An announcement could come as early as this week.

Hawaiian has officially announced that they will be adding the Boeing 787-9, powered by fuel-efficient GEnx engines, to their fleet. The first Dreamliner is expected to arrive in early 2021. They have placed a firm order for 10 787-9 aircraft, with purchase rights for an additional 10 planes.
This ends a competitive process between two great aircraft types: the Airbus 330-900 and the Boeing 787-9. Looking at aircraft capability, passenger experience, fleet complexity and total lifetime cost of ownership. The Dreamliner came out on top.
This aircraft will combine superior guest comfort with fantastic operational performance. It will allow Hawaiian to continue modernizing their fleet into the next decade and expand within current their route network with new destinations in the Asia/Pacific region and possibly Europe.

Good news!
I recently flew on a Hawaiian A330 in coach. It was awful. Worst widebody experience I ever had. I have flown once on a 787, LOT, in Biz class. The jet was very nice. The cockpit crew gave me about a 45" intro. It looks WAY better than any other Boeing product up front..computers, screens, interface, etc.

Cliffy, you are aware of course that the airline gets to choose the interior right? And are seriously comparing domestic coach to international business class in order to form your opinion as to how nice the aircraft is?

Since my Hawaiian A330 economy seat was the worst I have had on a widebody, I am assuming that Hawaiian 787 coach will be better... nowhere to go but up.
I have been on other carrier's biz class on a A330s, and they were not as good as the 787. I think the 787, overall is A LOT better than the A330.
I think the 787 will help Hawaiian a lot. Also, I'm sure that the pilots will like flying the 787 a lot better than flying the A330.

Why would you assume that? What makes you think HA would use different seats? What makes you think that pilots would like the 787 better than the 330? Will it pay more? Better schedules? Have you ever flown an airbus? Pretty comfortable plane and fun plane to fly.
