Turning down Delta for Hawaiian

Delta= more money, cheaper places to live, better overall job security long term, more travel options.
Hawaiian= more tight nit group, far more laid back crew, endless hours of not having to talk on the radios.
The elephant in the room is yes, you are Asian, you will fit in better with the local community.
Big factors are if you are married, if you have kids and how close you are with your families and where do they live? If your immediate family is West Coast then it may be a no brainer, go to HA. East Coast family will take 11+ hours and 2 days travel to visit and a 15+ hour trip back to Hawaii. Throw in some kids and the desire to have your kids actually know the rest of the family may change the decision a few years down the road when the sunshine and views wear off and the disfunction and crumbling infrastructure in Hawaii sinks in.
Lots of local pilots are deciding to move to the mainland for family (kid) reasons, the medium price for a very average home is north of $1 million, schools are generally not ranked all that well, and many feel it's not the same Hawaii they grew up in.
I'd say the "safe" bet is Delta. It'll be a safe move and very mundane.
Hawaiian will be the riskier move but offer more adventure that many people on the mainland will view as spectacular.
Either way, with the current contracts, you can either have a vacation home on the mainland or a vacation home in Hawaii.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the input.
By leaning towards going to Hawaiian, I think I was indeed making more of an 'emotional' decision but I also gave good thought about this fairly rationally in terms of career progression into a widebody, seniority, and the type of flying.
But like you guys said, perhaps Hawaiian does not have the best financials and business outlook - and I had no idea that you guys were on the risk for being bought out !? I guess I needed more research on my part in the job security aspect.
Cost of living is indeed daunting. But I'm 34 and I am willing to slug it out for a few years in any cheap, crappy place until I get established and save up some $ for better living.
Hopefully I can maintain my health long enough to work so I can afford a place
I don't have a class date from either company, so nothing is set in stone yet. I'll try to make a good decision that I won't regret!

This. Hawaiian is entangled with Amazon now and is less likely to be acquired with that entanglement. Hawaiian is one of the top employers in the state, possibly even number one. We’re a high beta due to our vulnerability, but curiously the strongest balance sheet air carrier is the least desirable based on upgrades, workday, and a certain single fleet type in this pilot job market.

From a business standpoint, Hawaiian is on shaky ground. Too much competition from
every direction. Easily a buyout target. The only thing Hawaiian has is a crew base in Honolulu. That shrinks and or goes away the emotional decision you made to work for them is down the drain. If you are from there it is a no brainer. If you are not…it is also a no brainer

You can get SEA or LAX as a new hire at DL and do one-legs to Hawaii, it doesn’t go senior. The money making potential and variety at Delta will almost certainly be greater in the long run. Nothing against Hawaiian tho, it’s a great gig.

Except seniority progression at Delta will be terrible.

Kinda jealous of your problem….Don’t forget that “Rock Fever” is real though. When you are done with a place or the people or the costs you cant just drive 1 state away and be happy…Have lived on several islands and dug it. Eventually rock fever got me though
