Default FE jobs

i've just started my new career in the air force as a flight engineer and it's as far as i want to progress in the military flying wise. i would love to someday get out and go to an airline or cargo and do the same thing but am afraid by the time i get there i won't be able to do it. i've also heard that you can move to the right seat after putting some time in. if anyone has any info on the whole thing please let me know. i'm always curious as to whats out there and always looking into the future. thanks in advance

As a guy who spent over 10 years in the AF as a Flt. Eng, first congrats, I'm sure its a big change from whatever you were doing before in the AF. You are right the FE jobs are disappearing as did the Navigator years ago. If you are interested in staying in aviation my advise would be include 2 things. 1. Finish your 4 year degree. 2. If your base has a flying club or even if not start getting your pilot certificates. Both of these things do take time, however if you want to stay flying they will be well worth it...Good luck

thank you, it is a change from turning wrenches on 117's and 16's. i'm happy i got the experience, but am also glad to be away from it. as for the liscense i have a private already and a multiengine rating and was working on my instrument before i came into the airforce. as you know money is tight in the af and haven't gotten to fly in 6 years. so i'm just happy that i can fly as a FE. so i just need to work on the degree and i'll get my faa ticket regardless. who knows, after 14 more years i may change my mind, but not likely.

Forget paying for dual, you'll find the crews you ask "20 questions" of, then exploit that relationship. To go anywhere outside the AF, you will need pilot credential and experience (as a pilot). Get your ratings at the areoclub....it's as cheap as you'll find.

Good luck
