There is no pilot shortage.

A person with 5100hr TT, 4100hr 121 Time, 900Hrs 121PIC, a college degree and no training failures can't even get an interview at anything above a regional. Atlas, ABX, Southern, Allegiant, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and ATI wont even offer an interview. And all that after spending $$ on application review services and resume re-writes just make sure there wasn't some simple mistake that would get application denied.

So ya, no pilot shortage, just PR garbage to get highschool kids to get mom and dad to drop $$ on training (or if they pay for it themselves they get the distinct honor of student loan debt for the rest of their lives)
Patience, it will come.

Your TPIC is low for the bigs, TT a bit low as well for an RJ driver. Also as was mentioned you *typically* need something else on the resume to make you stand out... volunteer, civic responsibility, military, whatever. They look at ten resumes, one or two are going to have some bright shiny bullet that makes that person interesting.

If you're younger, the LCC/ACMI may be concerned that you'll bail for the bigs when you get some more time. I know plenty of regional FO's getting called for LCC's, so you probably have a little too much TPIC for them... they figure your FO's will stay longer. A lot of them are actually deliberately hiring older folks or those with black-marks. Try failing your next recurrent, that might get you a call (kidding, don't do that but I bet it would work if you did).

I was hoping that through networking it would help, I have internals with at least 4 of them and working on a fifth. But no military time or Checkair man letter, nothing like that. But I was trying NOT to hijak this thread, so no focus on me, i'll get out EVENTUALLY but seems like an endless uphill struggle right now with all this talk of "PILOT SHORTAGE". Just not seeing the hiring. The lost decade is a thing for regional pilots and the hiring process just doesn't make sense most days.

And I don't know how to quote 2 separate posts and didn't want to spam up this thread anymore or get off topic, so for Rick......yes you are probably correct in the long term

That would be 3200 hours of 121 SIC. It begs a couple questions. Did you change employers? Or did you somehow not have seniority to upgrade until you hit 3200 hrs SIC?

Because I'm seeing a few people - especially in wholly owneds with flow - gathering LOTS OF SIC time and passing up on upgrades until they get senior enough to avoid reserve, hold the base they are in, or get a line, or even to be able to get a line nearly as good as the last one they had as an FO.

I've always wondered how that was going to be interpreted at the next level, as someone masterfully gaming the system or as someone lacking in ambition? Or as something else? Not a put down or implied criticism and since you have lots of apps out not necessarily applicable to you personally, just a question for ANYBODY with insight about that issue.

I had just under 3200 prior to upgrade. I took the first available. For those starting today at many regionals it won’t take that long, but there are a lot of us out there where it did. It took me just under 4 years. It is now just over 2 years at my airline.

.
I never thought of it that way honestly. Technically both, I did change employers and even after taking first available i didn’t upgrade until over 6 years total in the right seat. I guess looking at it that way my total time is actually lower than it should be for years of flying.

but again back to the point of this thread. new hires today will have about 2 yrs to upgrade in most places, while some will be eligible at 1000hrs of 121. and many places have flows, unfortunately mine does not. tho i will be honest, the flows don’t seem to be the carrot they once were as hiring at majors is still not at the advertised “pilot shortage” levels

That's incredibly normal. I had 3500 hours of SIC in one airplane, over five years, before I upgraded at the first available opportunity. Just three - four years ago, upgrade was still nine years at Eagle, and ten years at Horizon.

As I said, I understand being UNABLE to upgrade earlier due to either forced employer changes or just slow upgrade. But we are seeing more people ELECTING to not upgrade to avoid being a junior captain on reserve, and I simply wonder how the recruiters or interviewers at the major level are going to score that.

Ah, I see, I misread what you were getting at.
Hopefully recruiters don’t penalize pilots for avoiding reserve and poor QOL....

It can be a question as in why did you delay improving your qualifications when you had the chance. HR types are more into this type question than the pilot interviewer.

Hang in there! I know it sucks, I’ve been there. Not long ago I was in your shoes, and extremely frustrated. But I kept plugging away, doing what I could within reason. Then all of a sudden the door cracked open, and I FINALLY got a couple of interviews. That turned into a couple of offers with legacy airlines (without being a checkairman and no military experience). I also had a lot of SIC time due to the long upgrade times at my regional from the bad old days.

I always hated it when people told me my time would come and to be patient, but it really is true!
