Republic finished 2018 with 30 pilots hired at the big 3 COMBINED! 17 being military aviators, 13 pure civilians. Of the 13 pure civilians, 7 had resume boosters such as assistant chief pilot/check airman/sim instructor/union position/management pilot/etc.....

So the question people need to ask themselves is:
- are YOU going to be one of those remaining 6 out of a 2,500 pilot group hired?


That is about as far from a "pilot shortage" as it gets!

I hate this "requirement" or question from recruiters. I'm a damn pilot, not a social worker or politician. Their only concern should be if you're a safe, competent pilot and a likeable person that others would enjoy working with.

How about this answer to the recruiter. "I have 11 days off a month at home. I take care of my family and my home in those precious few days. I don't have the damn time to be Mother Teresa, okay."

"Ok well I think that's all we have. We'll call you, don't call us. Thank you for your time".

And that's why you'll never work for a legacy airline.

With the number of applicants, how else would you suggest they discriminate to find those to interview an hire?

The problem with such a belligerent response is that it might cause the recruiter to think that you are not “a likeable person that others would enjoy working with”. Some parts of our job require acting ability. ;)

Yes, you’re a pilot but to HR you’re also an employee and must have distinct ways to separate candidates from each other.

Maybe those who have the most RELEVANT education? The most flight experience? Maybe those who have the most ratings? Maybe those who have the most international experience? Or the best LOR's?

You know.....the things that might actually matter in your job performance.

Just because you volunteer at the soup kitchen doesn't make you a better pilot. It just shows that you are willing to suck up to some 20 something year old ivy league grad in the HR Dept. that thinks you are the better pilot because you pander to their personal social or political agenda.

I think they are looking for well-rounded, but keep with that attitude, you’ll go far.

In your case the response will likely be “But you had almost two decades worth of days off from flying, what have you done with your time to contribute to the greater good of society?”

747 Captain.....don't think I had anyone problem going far.


Yes, let's hire the so called well rounded individual instead of the most qualified..... for a job that involves life and death.
