Yes, they are! But the number quoted is not quite accurate. I just got off the hook with my old S/O (now a 727 right seater). He reports that the word is out in the crew room that the hire number for this year is closer to 500. A class of 34 started a couple weeks ago and a class of 17 started this Monday.

In addition, he says they ARE hiring directly into the right seat in some instances. . as they did a few years ago. If you are interested in rapid career progression, the son of a friend was hired about 6 months ago (6 months of probation to go) and he was just awarded a bid to the MD-11 right seat at LAX!

Flying nights is NOT at all glamorous, and some believe, detrimental to your health. But, there are NO Pax or F/A’s to deal with. And you get to fly “direct” on most legs and because of the hours, don’t get hung up in the “heavy traffic” the Pax folks do.

Over nearly 30 years I developed a severe caffeine habit <g> . . trying to stay up all night. .and REALLY appreciate sleeping in my own bed -at night, now. But, although they are well into their usual ugly contract negotiations, there will probably be a pay raise in the next contract. . while everybody else is giving concessions. Apparently business is BOOMING . . so the pilot group is in the driver’s seat.

I am an aspiring pilot hoping one day to have the chance to fly for FedEx and have a few simple questions.

I am wondering if there are GPA requirements attached to the need for a Bachelor's degree. I have a 2.5 which is a C average, would that put me between a rock and a hard place if I met the time requirements/medical/etc?

I, personally, don’t see where it should. Don’t think it ever has. I have known a lot of people who did not excel in “school” -but did fine in the practical world. Just having the sheepskin, whether it is a Gentleman’s C average -or complete with Phi Beta Kappa Key is an indicator they are looking for to establish a work ethic, “maturity” level, -and perhaps weed out those who lack the motivation to do whatever necessary to achieve their goal.

They put up these “barriers” to weed folks out. There WILL be interviews with line captains, a battery of tests, an interview with a shrink which will be far more important than a “C” average in college. Just having the degree is one of the hurdles an aspiring pilot needs to worry about. Of course, if you are still in school, you might think about hunkering down and applying that motivation to raising the GPA. I have known a lot of Marines who struggled for “C”s too <G>

I appreciate that bit of information. I have always been a C student throughout High School and currently college. I am always striving for better. I plan to finish my Business degree within the next 2 1/2 years and have that hard earned degree under my belt to fall back on. If all goes well I get to start on my Private Pilot license this summer and have some fun with it on weekends while in school.

When that good ole' day comes and I finally graduate I will do whatever is necessary to get the loans to do a Pro-course and earn all the Instructor ratings through MEI and with any luck instruct until I meet Regional requirements and take it from there. I am hoping I don't meet the ONE any time soon since that seems to be a common deterent with pilots taking jobs!

Does FedEx require a letter of recommendation from a Line/Mgmt pilot like UPS does?
