UPS...recommendations needed by HR?

HELLO FELLOW FLYERS!

I am currently with Delta...looking to get on with UPS. How many pilots does HR want recommendations from to consider pulling your name out for an interview? Never thought I'd be asking this question again after getting on with Delta 6 yrs ago!

Thanks for any info!

Only took one recommendation for me, but I'm sure more than one couldn't hurt. I don't think they are conducting too many interviews for the rest of '05, but who knows. Good luck.

Hey Glide,

My personal take on the rec letter is actually WHO writes you the letter. If you know anyone in a management position that could write you a letter, that is the best. Don't ask me why, but it worked for me. I have heard from others that it also worked for them. Letters from fellow pilots are still good, but remember that UPS is a trucking company with airplanes.

As wigwags said, interviews for the rest of the year have really slowed down. I believe they are still interviewing for management pilots, but think long and hard about that, as well as do a search on this forum concerning that topic. The money is enticing, but the lifestyle isn't. Good luck to you. I heard that we have recently hired a pilot from DAL that is in his fifties. Nothing like starting over!

Recommendations

Having a recommendation from a manager is helpful, but certainly not a quasi-requirement. When I was on probation both of my two recommendees were called in, and I was their only internal contact.

If I were to make a guess, I would say that having 2 recommendations has as much, or more weight than, a single manager's recommendation. A lot of guys getting calls seem to have 2 or more.

Good point

Freight dog,

You make a great point. I hope that my post didn't look like you required a letter from a manager. I was only speaking from my experience and those that were hired around the same time as me. I'm definitely NOT the most knowledgable when it comes to hiring in's and out's. I was also going on the fact that we were told that we, as probies, could write a letter of rec, but HR alluded to the fact that they might not carry as much weight as someone who has been here longer. It seemed that they were trying to disuade us from writing letters. What do I know? :D

Hey Freight Dog,

I was wondering. Is that picture of you a typical sight to be seen in a UPS cockpit?? :-)

Well, let's see. Coffee spilling? Check. Loosened or removed tie? Check. Bloodshot eyes? Check, at least on some of our legs. Cigarette? Nope. Stained shirt? An exaggeration. Plus, our shirts are now white; they used to be a cream color.

Oh Okay. Well I have to tell ya. Thats not a real airline pilot there. A real airline pilot doesn't wait until the cockpit to spill coffee on his shirt. He does it in the hotel van, where he can impress the flight attendents :-)

IF you are called for an interview, the first question HR would probably ask you is why didn't you want to work for UPS six yrs ago? UPS does not like to be thought of as someones second choice.
