Seattle area jobs?

I'm a new CFI/MEI working on my CFII looking for an employment in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Currently instructing in Arizona (wife was transfered to SEA). Any info leading to a job will be rewarded with lots of fermented, hop flavored, malt sugared, liquids! :D

I know Pavco Flight out of Gig Harbor (KTIW) is hiring CFIs. Which is about 5-10 mins west of Tacoma. Check out their website at www.flypavco.com. Fun people all around. The guy to talk to is Mike, he is he owner.

Galvin Flying Services, Boeing Field, Seattle.

I worked there for three years and have to say it's the best flight school I've ever seen. I've worked for two other flight schools. The Global Group in Glendale, AZ. Not too far from you. I also worked for American Flyers out of Morristown, NJ.

Galvin is the best by a long shot. The best equipment, facilities, and management. Now the pay is much better than when I left also.

Check the web site: www.galvinflying.com. The flight line is much better than the web site.

Galvin is now opening a flight school in Hawaii. Send your resume to Nick Frische. It's a great place to fly. I stayed with them for an extra year because I didn't want to leave and go to the airlines.

BTW: That's me with my student standing in front of the Seminole on the pilot training page with the Blue Angels flying by. He was my ATP student that just passed his practical. We snapped the photo a few minutes after his exam and got the timing perfect. Great checkride photo.:D

I think just about every flight school in the area is looking for CFIs. Go to Airnav.com, plug in the airport nearest where you're going to live, and look up every school/FBO on the field. Call them up and I'd bet you one of those malt-sugared beverages you'll have a job in days.

I've recently talked to the folks at Pavco (TIW)... great little operation. Mike's the owner, Dave is the chief pilot and probably the man you want to talk to. On the far North end of the area, Snohomish Flying Service has been looking for a CFI for a while now. It's a bit of a drive from Seattle, but a FUN place to fly! I also recently talked to somebody at Wing Aloft (can't remember his name!) at Boeing Field. They're also looking for CFIs.

Wings Aloft pays CFIs $13 an hour in the air and $10 on the ground and you owe then X-number of hours for every airplane *THEY* check you out in. So even if you have 300 hours in a C-172 you will still owe them for the time they spend with you to "give you the check out". So for that 1.5 hours in a checkout ride you have to give them 30 hours of dual

I know some former instructor's that worked in the Seattle area. Heck if you have enough time I know people at Horizon as well(if you are about the quality of life thing). Ok, so pm me if you are interested because it's been a good period of time since my last visit to the Pyramid Brewery.

That is a damn good idea, Ill give it a try. Let me know how it all goes for you?

Stay away from Havery field (S43). I was there for a little over a year. You will hate working for the Harvey family after about 2 weeks.

If you have your 135 IFR mins, try Aeroflight out of BFI. I had a great time flying checks around the NW.

I learn to fly with Wings Aloft. My instructor is particularly commendable; I can't make any judgment about the rest since I don't know them. Last I heard, Wings is looking for CFIs. The pay of $13 an hour is not too good, however. I don't remember making that amount of money in a very long time.

Look into IFS, Initial Flight Screening. You contract to the government to train guys and gals that have received flight slots in the military but have no experience. Yes it's pretty redundant. You basically get them soloing then get a new group. However you'll also get guys that are pretty good already and don't require all the training. Best part is you get to max them on their budget. I made over $45k last year as a CFI doing it and lived out in the middle of nowhere where living expenses were low. Paid off some debt and student loans. Had a blast out there doing and usually when the military guys get a weekend off they are always looking to party like it's their last night on earth. It pays around $25 per hour for air/ground and pre/post instruction.

Edit** I also instructed around 1300hrs last year on top of my other flying. If you want to pick up some hours and experience quickly it's a great way to go.

Wings Aloft has had some cash flow issues in the last 8 months resulting in bounced paychecks and some vendors not wanting to work with them. (ask around the airport) Instructors were told to buy fuel with their personal credit cards and wait for reimbursement.
At one pilot meeting one of the chief instructors told the pilots what other schools in the area were hiring.

I worked for the Harvey family for a while and I didn't find it so bad but they do do things differently. Also, you may have an opportunity to fly jumpers in their 182s then upgrade to a the Caravan on the weekend. I had fun there. PM me if you have any questions.

auburnpilot 07-08-2007 05:01 PM

Auburn is good

I flew at Auburn Flight Service as in instructor which was a good place to work. Shawn Pratt is the Chief there. Know your technical stuff. His interview is like a ATP check ride.

ChinookDriver47 07-12-2007 07:14 AM

Stay the hell away from Wings. There are about 30 instructors there all competing for the same student. Do yourself a favor, head up to Everett, or hit up the Narrows. Both of those airports have good ILS's that you can use to teach with when the weather turns to pot here in a few months.

Diito on the Auburn. Auburn is so busy sometimes, I think it needs a Tower.

444KA 09-26-2007 07:49 AM

Becareful about the schools that are doing the training of foreign pilots. Some schools are so desparate for CFIs that they are hiring from out of state and putting the CFIs up in rundown apartments that they share with their students.

Second on Aeroflight. Was a great experience. Silver02ex when were you there?

ChinookDriver47 09-26-2007 11:32 AM

I noticed that Aeroflight is now Aeroflight Academy of Aviation. What's with that? Did they open a training portion of it in BFI???

ChinookDriver47 09-26-2007 11:52 AM

Oh, and IFS for the Air Force is done in Pueblo, CO now. It is the only place it is conducted.

I trained at Aeroflight (Private) before going to college to finish the rest. Great school and company but I think I was one of the last few students before they shut down the flight school. They said insurance rates were too high. This was back in 2003.

Too bad to, it was the cheapest (by far) school at KBFI with 152's renting for $59. They also had a huge rental fleet including 2 mooneys, a Cessna 140, several 172s and 152s, a dutchess, 172RG, and a cherokee 140. My instructor was great and I think she went on to fly cargo for them when they closed the flight school.

Anywho, I'd love to know if the flight school has opened up again. I'm sure any job with them would be great though as they are a 1st rate operation. I flew a 172 in there last september and saw many of the same staff that were there in 2003.

AKfreighter 09-26-2007 02:19 PM

Anyone know what kind of a/c Aeroflight flies for freight? Kind of interested in work in that area.

ChinookDriver47 09-26-2007 04:46 PM

I think they are running Chieftain(s).

I was there from Apr 02-Oct 03. I learned a lot about flying during that time. The schedule was brutal, but it was a blast.

ebl14 10-08-2007 08:51 AM

Last summer regal in Paine Field (everett) was hiring at $15 an hour, I know a couple of guys there and they liked it.

Bowersbum 10-18-2007 09:20 AM

I work for Midstate Aviation which in contracted by Central Washington University. First year guys are paid $17/hr plus a $2,000 bonus after a 9 month contract. I'm sure were still needing some more qualified CFI's.

ChinookDriver47 10-18-2007 11:21 AM

Craig, is that you?
