Looking for a job...period

Alright ladies and gents, here's the skinny....

I'm a university flight program graduate with my commercial multi, instrument. Sitting on 325 total and about 45 multi. I have my master's degree in aviation and some military maintenance experience. I'm looking to get a job with a regional, but am having hard luck as of right now. Anybody have any insight into regionals and how to get an interview or where I can get a job doing some flying to build more time. I really do not want to flight instruct and feel that if I were to even try that route my heart would not be in it. That being said, it wouldn't be fair to myself or the student shelling out thousands of dollars. Either post on here or PM me if you have any info. Many thanks.

Try Pinnacle. They'll hire anyone.

Mesaba too.

Squawk_5543 08-08-2007 09:27 AM

You will definitely need some more time before you can start applying. Sorry to bust your bubble, but instructing is an awesome way to build knowledge and time. If you can't put your heart into instructing, what makes you think you can put your heart into other flying jobs. That makes you sound as if your not a people person, and the airlines don't want people like that. All those degrees are not going to help you get a job any sooner I'm sorry to say. You should not be flying passengers yet. You need to build experience and time. And pay no attention to the previous post, Mesaba is a good company.

Banner towing, sky-diver driver, pipeline patrol, traffic watch, aerial photography to name a few

HercDriver130 08-08-2007 09:46 AM

do what ever it takes to build some time... preferably multi but time time......They carriers are hiring YES.... but there is a limit.

Scenic minimums are Commercial/Multi. No number involved. Theres Scenic info in the thread too. Sounds like just what the guy needs.

de727ups 08-08-2007 10:07 AM

I'd concur with Scenic. If you had 500 hours, I'd say get a VFR 135 job in the canyon, that's what I did.

Anyhow, even with your times, you could probably eventually get on at a regional. You could do an RJ course and just buy your way in. Sadly, it's all the rage these days.

I also believe in the CFI as a way to build time, experience, seasoning, and develop your aviation skills. I can't tell you how many times I've heard guys say "I'd suck at it, don't want to do it". Then, they are forced into it and say what a great learning experience it is. To each his own, though, I agree that the last thing a guy should do is become a CFI if he's dead set against it.

Ewfflyer 08-08-2007 10:11 AM

I forgot another option of just paying out the arse. You could get 175hrs of nothing but multi for the hell of it. Ride-share is really a good way to cut costs if you do have to go out and "buy" time.

looking for a job

Its like picking up women, sometimes its a numbers game..send out those resumes, network, show them you're interested, committed and withing reason aren't looking to take no as an answer.

Fill out those apps, sell yourself, keep alot of lines in the water and something will bite. Its admirable to be able to admit you might not be that enthusiastic about instructing but at the same time you really can't say if you haven't tried. I felt the same way until I realized I learned as much as I taught.
Accept that your first job might not be the one you dreamed it would be but its a start.

Check ^to350.com, increase those hours while searching and keep plugging away. Thats my "program" as I'm in the same boat.

OnMyWay 08-08-2007 09:22 PM

USA Jet Airlines. They interviewed me at 275TT. DO-20's and DC-9's. $56.00 an hour. Yes there are some hangups but probably the best opportunity for a low time pilot. PM me by tomorrow (packing up and moving from PHX to PDX) and I'll give you an E-mail address.

FlyerJosh 08-09-2007 04:44 AM

Piedmont hires low time pilots. Posted mins are Commercial/Multi.

Mitragorz 08-09-2007 05:57 PM

OnMyWay, any chance I could get that email also? I can't PM, but my email addy is [email protected]

I looked at them a few weeks ago, but the website said that there weren't any open positions, so I just moved along.

I'm in the same boat he is... 400TT, 45 multi. I've been sending resumes out to a bunch of places (including Grand Canyon Airlines and Scenic) but the only place I've heard back from is Southern Seaplanes in New Orleans. I'd rather be logging that turbine time, though.

A10crewdawg 08-10-2007 06:02 AM

USA Jet

Just got an email from USA Jet,

Times are too low. They want 1000 and 500 multi.

Mitragorz 08-10-2007 06:08 AM

Ah, well nevermind then. The "interviewed with 275TT" got me excited.

Bobs98tlr 08-12-2007 01:24 PM

IFL Group in Waterford, MI...fly Convairs, Falcon 20's and 727's. Only hire low timers in the Convairs/FA20's. Climbto350.com has a posting. Mins are 500tt 100multi but take guys with a lot lower. Pay is better then first year at a regional.

belliott 08-12-2007 07:59 PM

Not to hijack the thread but does anyone have any idea what IFL pay is like? Or better yet... does anyone work for them?

Fly power lines or pipelines. You can easily do 100hrs a month, at least in west Texas, so after a few months you'll be golden. The airlines will still be here when you get done :D

Yes it depends on which aircraft you want and where you want to be based. Up north you don't make as much as you will if you fly out of south Texas. Falcon 20 FO pulls around 5-6k a month.

You get a base salary of (don't hold me to this) $27k.
You get paid if you help load the planes.
You get $125 evertime you cross the boarder.
You get .12 cents per mile.

Couple the mileage with the border crossing pay and that's why the guys in Texas pull so much ahead. They also have a 727 but don't need anyone to fly it just yet.

You will have to live in your base and have a 30 minute callout to be at the airport when in the south. They are not CASS.

They have a few Convairs they fly up north but I don't know their pay. I think 13 or 14 cents per mile but they are much slower.

Currently they aren't really hiring. That changes often though. Captains make in the 6 figures down south. Much less up north.

error

wrong place.........

A10crewdawg 08-12-2007 08:56 PM

Anyone on here ever flown for, or is flying for, IFL group?

NoJoy 08-12-2007 10:02 PM

Try to get your CFI, II and MEI through AllAtps. It will cost you a little $, but it will make you a better pilot. Then you can get a job with them and move on at 1000tt and 600+ multi. For any regional you need to be instrument current and very proficient. Teaching, especially instruments will keep you instrument current. The last thing you need to happen is get hired by a regional and struggle with training because you lack the instrument skills. Plus as a former CFI, you will be more of an asset to the CA and be a better CA when you upgrade. Something to think about.

j3gibbon 08-13-2007 01:33 PM

you could always look into gojet or TSA, but they aren't looked upon very favorably around here (this website), but they would probably give you a job.

cfii2007 08-13-2007 02:24 PM

I agree.....the last thing you want to do is be low time and wash out of training.

i applied there a while ago... i heard that they wern't goin to be hiring till about christmas. i have a friend that works there and said that some months he only flys 10 hours and others he flys all the time. he seems to like it. i quit waiting for them though... i need a job before christmas.

Bobs98tlr 08-20-2007 11:10 AM

IFL is a good place.

They are hiring at the moment for Captains/FO's on the convair

FO pay- $2000 a month base, $100 if you cross a boarder, $25 a day on duty, $35 a day on an overnight. $.12 a mile after you accumulate up to your base salary. Some months you can fly around 70-80hrs, some you dont fly but maybe 5hrs. In july i only flew 5hrs basically and so far this month month im up to 75, and will hit 80 for sure. Must live within 20min of PTK airport. Training isnt bad and the people here are pretty cool. This is for the PTK based crews. The crews down in south TX are paid from a different company or something i dont know how it works but they have a slightly different pay scale.

Some guys have been hired with alittle less then 300tt so send them a resume or check them out on Climbto350.com

A10crewdog- Are you out of battle creek? We have a falcon driver that use to work on the A10. I forget his name but hes a badass dude. Either way pm me if you can.
