FAA Flight Inspection Operations Group
Does anyone on here know anything about flying as an FAA flight inspector, ie Flight Check? I’m generally familiar with what type of flying they do, but I’m curious about the hiring process, experience required, schedules, pay, etc. Thanks.

Pay is good to above average probably... dont know about the schedules... but there use to be (emphasis on use to be ) a federal rule which they would only hire those that could complete 20 years of combined federal service by the age of 55...dont know if thats true or not now....but it use to be.

Sid...are you looking at air carrier or GA ops inspector? Both of my parents are ASI's *ick*...
For ops I know they require 1500TT, not sure what the break down is for that - PIC/ME, etc. I know they both make a pretty penny now, but they've been there a while now. I could certainly ask what their pay was when they first started, although both came from previous gov't jobs. I'm sure if you went to www.faa.gov it'll show it somewhere on a vacancy. As for hiring, go talk to the FSDO in your area. That's always a good start. Go on the FAA website and look to see if they have any vacanies...and all the forms are on there for you to start. Schedule...they both work 8-4. Typical holidays, and every other Friday off. They do travel a lot though...they have their own offices...and yes like everyone else at the FAA they obviously know it all. Anywho, yeah start by going to their website www.faa.gov/jobs/ I think it is. You can apply online. If you still have any questions, let me know and I'll call them for you. |
search USAJOBS.gov for "pilot" or "airplane", there are several FAA flying jobs listed... also used for CBP, etc...

Hey Jenn
Could you PM me. I don't access yet to send a message. I have been trying to get into the FAA as an ASI for about a year now, but there haven't been any openings in my area. I have a couple questions about the position, especially about the travel portion of your post. Thanks in advance. |
*Edit...thaddeus, since it wouldn't let me PM I made up a b.s. email account so you can get in touch with me privately. I don't want to put my regular address because it has my name and it's the one I use for work...so I don't need spam on that.

Sid- they have an office and pretty big flight ops department at Fulton County Apt. (KFTY) in Atlanta, and I have seen them for years and also have attended lectures given by them. The thing to so is call the tower at KFTY (404-505-9977) and one of the guys there will give you the hangar number for the hangar at FTY, then you call that number and ask the persons working there how to get a job with them. Of course, if you want to work at another location you will have to get some more information, but this should be a good start. Great job, all they do is check approaches in King Airs, and from what I gather they don't work very hard. I don't know about the money but I do remember one of them said he quit flying for a major airline so he could take the job, and he likes getting home a lot.
