Looming Pilot Shortage

Hi!

This is why (from a poster on ppw.com):

  • Emirates Airlines – has 193 new aircraft on order, more than its current fleet of 115. Current average fleet age is just 5 years.
  • Qatar Airways – has 145 new aircraft on order. It currently has a fleet of 61 aircraft, with an average age of 4 years.
  • Singapore Airlines – has 82 new aircraft on order. Its existing fleet of 97 aircraft has an average age of 6 years.
  • China – more than 800 new aircraft are scheduled for delivery to various airlines by 2016.

How many pilots does China need, by itself, to crew 100 airplanes per year for the next 8 years???

the shortage is more on international carriers than we will see here im sure,,but there is a shortage here on available pilots that want to work for what is offered anymore, if pay goes up pilots might go back to work,,i heard some 30-40 percent of pilots on furlough did not go back,,if thats cause they got other jobs within or outside aviation im not sure. and the retirement over the next 5-10 years will definitely cause some shortage of qualified captains.

The simple solution is: raise the pay. Have you ever heard the saying: "Build it and they will come"? It is the same, simple, principal.

I don't think we have a pilot shortage in the states. I don't know how many people are willing to help the rest of the world out. I know that I'm not willing to go to any of those places ... well I would go to Singapore, but my wife won't which means I won't.

Pilot Shortages Worldwide
International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned that there may be a severe global pilot shortage “unless industry and government work together to change training and qualification practices. Newly released estimates forecasts that the industry may need 17,000 new pilots annually due to expected industry growth and retirements.

FAA Forecasts Fleet Growth
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is forecasting that the number of commercial aircraft in the U.S. fleet will grow to 12,202 by the year 2025, increasing at an average rate of 2.5% from the 2007 level of 7,816. Commercial fleets will see a net gain of 92 aircraft this year and 80 in 2009 with the majority growth generated by low-cost carriers.

The ATA is the anti-ALPA. They're just putting out this BS so they can lower hiring requirements instead of raise pay.

A lot of the SQ plane orders are to replace their 747s and 777-200s. The 747s are to be phased out by 2011 and the 777s by 2013, replaced with the new orders.

I heard that in by the end of 2009 they want to standardize the FAA and JAA so they are interchangeable.
