Freelance ferry pilot gig, training?
 

Hello all. I have been offered to join an aircraft ferry company as a freelance pilot. I can do domestic ferry flights without any training; I already have. But if I want to get in on the international action, I will need some training to meet the insurance requirements. I was recently trying explain this to an FO from XYZ major airline. Without really listening, he thought I was saying that this was a Pay-for-Training job. I was a little discouraged when he was a little rude about it. If he thought it was PFT, I can understand.
In reality, I need to get some training from an independent company and also do at least a few North Atlantic crossings with someone who is qualified before I can be insured on my own. That would require me to furnish my own airfare back home for those insurance mandated trips.
I am NOT an employee of this company, they just hook me up with trips and they get a commission. I have been searching for a Ferry Pilot gig for a while, and this arrangement seems to be the norm. I am NOT paying this company for training; in fact I can choose to do the training wherever I want.

Does this idea sound reasonable to you guys?

Do a search on here a few months back someone asked for info on taking a 172 across the pond, I think it was in the "major" threads. From what I gathered take a least 3 or 4 trips with someone who has done it, then you can do it yourself. Hope you find the thread its very long but a good read. Maybe a mod can post a link to it.

Thanks guys. Does it sound reasonable to do that training out of my own pocket since I will be freelance and free to do what I want?

I can't tell you if its reasonable because I don't know that side of the industry but I strongly urge you to try and find a company that will pay for it.
Good luck on your search......and if you can find any thing that goes across the pond take it for the experience and maybe that will be how you can get your training.

Hi all, especially those who followed my thread about a month back.

I went, I made it there, I had a fantastic time, I loved it, and I can't wait to do it again. Flying over the greenland ice cap in a SE piston was a great experience, with fantastic scenery.

Regarding crossings, you'll need 5 "dual" before an insurance company will be able to cover a solo trip. Also, if you are planning to do this for the money, think twice.:D:D:D
