I am a regional guy displaced to the right seat of a RJ and was thinking about going to World but can find little info. about the life style. Is it true that you are gone 3 weeks in a row? How do they do that and give you your min. number of days off a month? Can someone tell me what are the plus and min. of this kind of flying please.

As of this date, pilots at World are given 12 days off a month, BUT you can be asked to fly for six of those at a financial penalty to the company. Lineholders have a minimum of 12 days off. Yes, you can be gone for three weeks in a row, especially if you flow from one month to the next. (example, you work the last week of December and the first two weeks of January)

Pluses: Direct into a widebody jet with a MD-11 type rating. Fly all over the world. Long international layovers. Good pay for the type of carrier and getting more competitive with the majors as they drift down to our rate. Six days off in a row each month. Can have long periods off at home. Future contract will have improvements in lifestyle. Homebasing, no commuting to work.

Minuses: Can be away from home for long streches at a time. Less stable than SWA, Fed Ex, UPS. North American could lower growth at World. Can be asked to fly into some less than desireable locations/ war zones.

The dirty little secret is that if you last two or three years, you come to realize that you like the lifestlye. I've been at World for ten years myself.

I came over from AWAC, and have been very happy so far, although I am still very new so I can't speak to much of the lifestyle from personal experience. I could never stomach going back to the regionals! This place is much, much better!

Even the guys with families seem to like the schedules. You'll be home a lot more than at a regional - especially if you currently commute - it's just all in one big chunk.

The other thing about time at home is that your commute to the plane is almost always part of your work time, not your days off. So 12 days off means 12 days off at home, not jumpseating back and forth to work. My wife seems to like having me home for longer periods too.

World is making money and getting planes. Intl heavy cargo is the future for good pilot jobs. World is a better job than any pax carrier including SWA!!

Anyone know what are the REAL mins. that World will accept for employement. Should I try to get someone to walk in a resume or does it even matter with this company?

A personal recommendation means alot at World.

Real minimums are tough right now. We have hired mostly RJ captains and former major/national pilots lately. It used to be 20 plus year military pilots.
