The FAA sets you up for the test in various different locations around the country once you apply. It is part of the application process - I don't believe that any random person can sign up to take the ATSAT. but who knows, I could be wrong. I took mine in a hotel conference room 15 minutes from riddle (where I did the atc program... because at the time they were not hiring off the street.) You dont go in a simulated radar room. It may have changed since I took mine, but I doubt it. It is computer-based, and there a few "games" included in there to test the kind of aptitude you might need for an ATC position, but it is very general and any person who has no idea what ATC even stands for can do it by following instructions.

No, thats not the posting for off the street people. You see how in the vacancy code you see "CTI"? In the off the street one I believe you will see something with "PUB NAT." Like I said, the CTI grads go through a slightly different hiring process, for them they can start the process right after they successfully finish their degree as long as the FAA is still hiring of course. So that posting for CTIs is always there. As far as I've seen for off street people the vacancy postings were very random (and they can only apply when these postings become available.) I think like a year and a half ago when they first started hiring off the street, they posted the vacancy on a regular basis, but it's tapered off since. Keep on checking though, because I bet another one is due to be posted in the next couple months.

[quote=kalyx522;647555]yeah. they are hiring off the street now so there is absolutely no need to waste money on an air traffic control degree. CTI grads get trained too, just like an off the street person will. i think as far as training goes, only difference is that CTI grads get to skip like the initial 2-3 weeks of training. there is a specific name for the training that they skip, forget what it was called. as far as hiring goes, CTI grads go through a different process instead of having to apply through the public job posting like off the street people have to (see below.) quote]

ok i understand. i got confused when you said the above statement. maybe you just made a mistake or something?? anyway, thanks for the help. its def something to think about the way the airline industry is. ill keep checking...

lol, ok sorry. i meant that they are hiring off the street now, as opposed to in the past they didnt. not that they are hiring RIGHT NOW, although like i said that could change any moment if they publish a vacancy.

So the pilot being controlled has less stringent retirement requirements than the controllers?

To my knowledge it is not a pilot/controller thing it is a gov job thing.

I applied for PUBNAT8 and I got the e-mail for the AT-SAT on 9/22. I am scheduled to take it on November 3rd in Coraopolis, PA.

Congratulations. You have been selected to take the Air Traffic Selection and Training (AT-SAT) test. This letter is notification that your testing location is Coraopolis, PA. You will be scheduled for a single, 8-hour testing session between the dates of October 6-November 12. There will be no testing on Saturdays or Sundays. All travel and lodging arrangements and expenses are your responsibility. The test will be administered for the FAA by Robinson Aviation (RVA), Inc.

Test dates will be assigned on a first call, first served basis. You must call Robinson Aviation at (405) 840-3771 between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Central Time no later than October 2, 2009 and speak with a test scheduler. Please write down your test date. Once we have scheduled your date, you will not be contacted about the test again. It is your responsibility to remember your test date and arrive on time for the test. If you are not available during this time or are no longer interested in taking the AT-SAT test, please call and let us know.

The test will be given in the Davidson Room at The Embassy Suites Hotel-Pittsburgh Int'l Airport and will begin promptly at 8:00 AM.

Embassy Suites Hotel-Pittsburgh Int'l. Airport is located at:
550 Cherrington Parkway
Coraopolis, PA 15108
(412) 329-2605
Please do not call the hotel regarding this test!

Identity verification will take place prior to testing. You need to arrive at the testing room before 7:30 AM on your scheduled test date. Please bring this letter and two forms of identification. One form must be a photo ID issued by a government agency. Both must have your signature. Remember, you must have two forms of identification.

The test will be video/audio taped for security purposes.

You will not be allowed to use electronic devices such as calculators, personal digital assistants (PDAs), cell phones, or calculator watches during the test, nor will you be allowed any written material. You will not need pencil and paper and these will not be allowed in the test room. No cameras or visitors are allowed in the test room. The test is computer-based requiring the use of a keyboard, mouse, and headset.
The test is self-paced and the maximum time allowed for the test is eight hours which includes two 15-minute breaks and a 45-minute lunch period. You may take additional breaks, but the total time allowed will remain eight hours regardless of the number of breaks you take.

Again, a testing slot will not be reserved for you unless you call Robinson Aviation (RVA), Inc. and coordinate a test date. We look forward to seeing you at the AT-SAT test.
