Totaly agree. That's how I got the job draggin' rags and that's how I got my new job in the Navajo. Sure I've applied at probably a hundred companies in the last year and called around but it's been my friends and acquaintances that have come through for me. I will say though that had I not towed for 1000 hours I would not have had the total time required by the company I will be flying the Navajo for. That's what I meant by get your time and get the next gig.

To get back on topic... Tom if you would like info on banner towing please PM me and I will try and answer any questions. I actually worked for the guy in SC that cruiseclimb posted about. Banner towing is not a glorious life by any means but it's fun and can be a great way to built hours fast.

Just out of curiousity where in SC was the banner towing gig? Myrtle Beach perhaps? I ask simply because I am in the same boat as a CFI/II. South Carolina is a horrible place to get off the ground flying so to speak. Nothing going on and the money dried up with customers. So now I am leaving for another trip to Iraq.

There's no such thing as bad flight time. Some is just better than others. Banner towing and dropping jumpers is done VFR, so a recruiter told me they would take the instructor over the banner guy since it was better quality flight time in their eyes.... I'd personally rather tow or work at the DZ...

There used to be 2 banner companies in Myrtle, now just one out of North Myrtle (Grand Strand). Pay was pretty terrible, but the fact that I flew 40-50 hrs a week made up for it. I'm glad I did it as it's led to better job opportunities. I didn't have to pay for the CFI ratings and started building time. I've been lucky enough to find other part time jobs where I could continue building multi/instrument time. I think that's the key if you want to build time but still have a competitive resume. I do know of people that have gotten into towing and are now 3-5 years into doing it because they have no other experience and once you have that much day VFR time its hard to be marketable. If you've got any questions feel free to PM. Good luck and god speed on your next tour.
