As I work at YVR I sometimes get to see the Transport Canada version of this job. I don't know how it works in the States, but seeing the low level maneuvers these guys get to do in such busy airspace makes my mouth water. It looks like a very fun job, albeit most likely quite stressful at times.

Cleco -

That is a great link for information that Golden Bear gave you. If you go to that page, then click on the History link and look 3/4 of the way down the page.
Starting with the paragraph that starts:

http://www.naco.faa.gov/images/pic20.jpg

During the mid-1980s, in an effort to address fuel conservation and the structural condition of the Sabreliner 80 fleet, a decision was made to purchase a new flight inspection aircraft to replace the Sabre 80. Beechcraft offered a modified version of its Beechcraft BE-300 Super King Air turboprop-powered corporate transport. In 1986 the FAA ordered 19 of the Super King with an upgraded AFIS system, with deliveries commencing in 1988. .....
That page shows good pictures of what aircraft they are flying at present and what fleet they hope to go to in the future.

Currently they are flying the King Air 300 with an EFIS cockpit but are updating with ProLine21 avionics. they are also still flying the Lear 60s but are in the process of phasing them out for a fleet of Challenger 601, 604 and 605 fleet.

Thankyou Goldie and USMCFLYR....just wanted to know what flavor to expect for the flight eval IF I am LUCKY ENOUGH to get a "call"! Paperwork is in! I haven't had a chance to read the link but will here shortly. Anyone have any idea of the rough number of pilots at each branch (ATL, NJ, OKC, CA)? Trying to get an idea of my chances at OKC.

Just to keep the thread going.......
I at least got the notice back that they received my application by the due date! This is the first application feedback I've had in a LONG time ;)

Well...here is to waiting for that next notification!

USMC, did you get the notice back in the mail via usps or did you get e-mail notification? My mail box is 54 miles away from my house, so I probably won't see anything until at least Monday.

Regular old snail mail Clue.
Remember that page that they asked be put on top of the entire package - with your return address on it a few times? They just tore it off, stamped it with a received time/date and mailed it right back.

Are these the "Flight Check" pilots?

If so, quick story about the time I flew with one of these pilots that did a contract day on the side for us. Though I had nothing to hide, I was a little nervous when I found out I was going to be flying with an FAA guy. He had either heard this before or sensed my apprehension because he quickly introduced himself with, "Don't worry, we're afraid of the same guys you are...."

Sounds like a great gig. Good luck to those that applied.

Yes - the OP's title is the long formal name for the 'Flight Check' guys.
they have absolutely nothing to do with the regulatory side of the FAA - and therefore none of the bennies either :( I have been told that they get ramp checked every now and then also. At least in some offices they seem to be co-located with the FSDOs so you would think that they have a good relationship, it seems that it is more the gov't way of staying in your own lane and not even peeking outside.

I was hoping that we would hear from a few of them on this thread to share some of the insider stories. Come on guys - don't be shy! :p
