Depending on the aircraft type - yes they occasionally fly with the AD Flight Check.

And on a related note, I've noticed from some online searches that the FAA aircraft are in other countries from time to time. How often are these "deployment opportunities" available?
There are aircraft dong international flight inspection on an almost consistent basis. These 'international itineraries' last from as few as two weeks to as long as 4-5 weeks if the trip is extended and the crews agree to stay out.

And finally, can you go straight into one of the jets, is a new hire always going to go to the King Air, or are you duel qual'd?
It is possible to go straight into one of the jets.
The dual qual comes and goes. Right now - it is an 'IN' thing and we have quite a few dual qual'ed people. You do not have to be dual qual'ed if you don't want to be though.

Thread bump.

For those interested - EXTERNAL and INTERNAL announcements ought to show up on USAJOBS.gov in approx. mid-late May for hire/start date in late July to early August timeframe.

One constant stumbling block that is non-negotiable is the recency of flight experience. 100 hrs in the last 12 months for EXTERNAL applicants (50 hrs for INTERNAL applicants).

This thread has a lot of good (fairly current and accurate) information in it; but if you have specific questions, feel free to contact me via PM.

Thank you for posting quickly ncbull.

Here is some additional information.

External announcement: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/537394900

Internal announcement: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/537395700

Note: The internal announcement is also open to former excepted service federal employees eligible under an interchange agreement. Current or former federal employees must have met a one year probationary period or trial period in the competitive or excepted service. Applications will be accepted from preference eligibles and veterans who are honorably discharged from the Armed Forces after completing at least 3 years of continuous active duty service. (VRA hires)

This is a intro paragraph to very basically explain the job:
Quote:
Participates in the data gathering, analysis, and flight inspection of navigational aids (NAVAIDS) and instrument flight procedures (IFPs). Recommending certification, restrictions, or removal of NAVAIDS and IFPs from service in support of the national airspace system (NAS) or under the authority of the FAA
There is a new promotion order/sequence that these new hires will be under.
I am told that offers will be made directly to GS-13 at hiring. The upgrade to ASIP is currently taking 12-18 months. Once passing the ASIP checkride and becoming a certified ASIP, they will be required to obtain 100 PIC hours, then be promoted to on a non-competitive basis to GS-14. Also, the SRS is still being worked on by management, but be informed that we are not funded by the same TITLE as the other gov't flight programs (such as JPATS, CBP, etc....) and therefore it seems to be taking more time and effort to get approval. It is not guaranteed at this time.

A reminder that this thread - especially in posts in the last few years (to cut down on saying you have to read the entire thread) is full of good and accurate information regarding the application and interview process. There is good information about the QOL and specifics of the job. It is my opinion that this is NOT a good time building job for a young pilot looking to get experience to move onto the airlines. I always emphasize that if you want to be an airline pilot, then this is a great time to apply to the airlines. If you are looking to improve your resume for all levels of airline flying there are MUCH easier paths to gain hours and such than the work required in this job. Buyer beware - just my opinion.

Thread bump.

For any that may have applied, I have been informed that the original EXTERNAL announcement was CANCELLED, causing some confusion about the application process and plans to hire.
I queried up the chain and was told that BIG HR had made a mistake on the original external announcement and had to cancel it and resubmit for another open application period. I was also told that some who had applied under the former announcement might have to resubmit under the new announcement. I don't know what might have prompted some to get an email stating to resubmit the application and others have not. Taking all of that information in, I think it would be in anyone's best interest to contact the HR POC on the announcement and CONFIRM the status of your particular application.

Details of why the original announcement was cancelled and another announcement was submitted.
Of note - ALL EXTERNAL APPLICANTS MUST RE-APPLY. internal applicants ARE NOT affected by this HR error

Quote:
Vacancy announcement AAC-ATO-19-AJF1200-62544 was advertised erroneously under “Direct Hire Authority” (which translates to Veterans Preference does not apply). Unfortunately, this part of the process is outside AJF control. Therefore, the vacancy has been canceled and re-advertised under AAC-ATO-19-AJF1200-62895 to allow for Veterans Preference and traditional rating and ranking of applicants. All applicants who applied for the original vacancy were sent an email to re-apply on the new vacancy. The new vacancy posted today and it's up through 7/26/19.

There is no impact to applicants on the internal bid. Applicants on the external bid MUST re-apply. Folks who did not apply before can also apply on the external announcement.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Refer applicants with questions to HR (Wanda Jones at 405-954-8019).

Update:

It seems that many of you have contacted me with news that they received a call to set up a PHONE INTERVIEW. This is news to me as I have never heard of doing phone interviews with pilots before. In my time here, during external and internal hiring, they have always brought the applicants to OKC for the HR panel interview, technical interview, and flight evaluation. When I asked up the chain about these phone interviews I was told:

1. The telephone interview replaces the HR panel interview.
2. The technical interview is now a test that is emailed to you and you have a limited time to complete and return.
3. There is no flight evaluation.

On another front, it becoming more and more likely that the FAA Flight Operation Program Office will be receiving the SRS pay scales in the future. On top of that - at least for external hires I understand - they will be HIRED at GS-13/1 level - and once they pass their ASIP check ride (guessing 12-18 months) - they will immediately be promoted to GS-14/1. As a comparison it took me almost 3.5 years to get to that point from GS-11/1 to GS-14/1. This is a much more aggressive promotion standard.

So - interviews are in progress. Good luck to all who applied.

Disclaimer: This is to the best of my knowledge based on general information passed in meetings and a few questions that I have asked up the chain. I am NOT involved in the process and have no insider knowledge, nor am I involved in the decision making process. Take everything with a grain of salt!
