Let me suggest whatever you see today, may, and probably will be, quite different in your stated time frame.

A workmate of mine was recalled to PanAm in 1989. He flunked out of training, and returned to our work place. PanAm was liquidated in 1991. Two years from "hiring" to gone.

Not saying SkW is going to be gone, but in 2006-2007, they were hiring anybody who could breath, and have 1000 hours (some even got in with slightly less). On July 3, 2008, they cancelled their new hire class scheduled for July 7. They haven't hired since. I wonder how many resigned from whatever gig they had, went on a holiday weekend trip, only to find no job?

One of the two guys I know came back to our CFI gig. Hopefully he got called back, for his sake, he's itching to get out.

I know that! I dont expect the same job openings today to be there in a few years from now. I just look at all the companies here in Canada and down in the United States status to gauge how the industry is changing up and down. I expect companies to open and close during my training due to economy and such. I hope I am more clear now :)

SKW is only looking to hire about 150 or so... It's gonna be like trying to win the lotto, but you'll never win if you don't play.

I believe you are doing the right thing despite of what you read on these replies, actually it is always a good idea to try to look at the picture as a whole, rather than with a microscope, it is going to pick up sooner than later. It was a tragedy in 2001-2002 and then a hiring frenzy 2006-2007. Just don't get into this for the money, do it because you love flying as most of us do. Good luck!

The official hiring number is 16 pilots. I hope we will hire more though!

I hear you man! I have the opportunity to become a police officer, but I do not want to settle because I know I will keep wondering how far I would have gotten in this industry. I know I am still training, but that is the beginning of the journey. I have a few legit connections already due to other jobs I have had surprisingly outside of the aviation world. For example I have done a few oil changes for people and we end up having a few conversations with some and I would mention my future goals and one person happened to be a pilot and give me their numbers and few other numbers. If I was worried about the finances I would have just stuck with becoming a cop. I know finances will not be the best for many years as I try earn jobs and get with bigger companies. One thing is for sure, I will be happy during every second of it! Money cannot buy happiness. :)

Go become a cop. And fly on the weekends. I still love flying but the state of the industry has made me hate it. I got into this industry at age 18, then flight instructed at a 141 school for 1.5 years, then went to the regionals flying a Dash 8 for $14,000 a year. I had 37 pax life's in my hand. Is that worth $14,000 a year!?!?!? I am already pot committed in this job. All my student loans and time has been wasted. I am 24 years old, have no money, no job, way too much in student loans, not even a glimmer of hope of getting hired anytime soon, and live with my parents. Sound good to you so far. This industry is a nightmare. I will never recommend anyone to go into this career. You simply work too hard for no reward!!!

Even then, from the topic in the Regional Forum most people were saying that those slots were going to UAL, poolies or a few others. I may have misread that (as I probably did). Also, there is the usual "there are 10,000 pilots on the street with thousands of hours of turbine time."

But hey, I'm just repeating what everone is saying. I am just a lowly CFI

Tell you what ma man....I used to be that guy that always listened to the gospel of others except my own. I soon realised that unless I bought a damn ticket, I stood no chance of winning the lottery.
Let them say what they have to say about this that and the other...... but above all, just do what you have to do and your time will come. Always, I mean ALWAYS turn in your application reagardless. You will be surprised.

I must say... you have an excellent point.

wmuflyboy 12-29-2009 12:57 PM

that is/was my mentality too sniper until i talked to a couple old flight instructors of mine who work there. im just a CFI too. they said to put in my app. they even gave me their employee numbers for an internal rec. i dont know if that helps or not but it cant hurt. i think we all know they arent going to hire off the street but at least our resumes in the pile. never know, yours might stand out more than mine when time comes.....

Yeah, I did the same with internal rec by the chief and an instructor. (crossing fingers) but not holding my breath.

snippercr 12-29-2009 02:49 PM

This may be a bit to general, but my interpretation (and experience so far) has been "In the pile" or "on file" generally means your resume was filed in the blue container... Think that is true in this case? I dont have their minimums so I am not even applying but that's been my experiences with flight schools.

wmuflyboy 12-29-2009 06:13 PM

dont be so negative bud. if u dont meet their minimums then your app wont go through anyways. but im sure theres some people who think that and have been lucky enough to be in the right time, right place. could be you. but only can happen if you put yourself out there.

Sorry. Currently inbetween jobs right now (read unemployed) and I've been spending too much time here. I need to take a break. It's starting to get to me.

da_flyn_hawyn 01-12-2010 09:24 AM

My computer sucks! I posted twice

da_flyn_hawyn 01-12-2010 09:29 AM

My student's father is actually the top pilot at SkyWest and was the one who posts hiring announcements and I had the great opportunity to meet him just a couple of days ago and this is what he told me about them hiring. They made a contract with United as they obtained a couple of planes from them. The contract also stated that they needed to hire furloughed United pilots. So the hiring has been done and they posted the hiring announcement looking only for 6 non-United pilots. As for the future, he made a comment about receiving Brasillias in the future and will "definitely"(his words) be looking for pilots. When that is, it sounded to me like it would be some time this year, so I'm crossing my fingers.

Hope this is good info!

Good Luck All!
