Looking for some info...!
Hey guys and gals,
Im looking into the transition from law enforcement to civilian flying. I have been toying with the idea for a while so I'm looking for some info. I know that times are rough in the aviation industry right now so I am not looking for something immediate. Some may argue that I have a great flying job already with benefits, a pension yadi yaid yadi... I know, I have heard it all! I appreciate everything I have at the moment...believe me. I plan on sticking around until the industry is fully recovered (if it ever happens). I am just looking foward to expanding my flying experience beyond local flying in circles. So, if anyone out there recommends a new path, share with me your ideas. What would be the steps you would take if you could do it all over again? Thanks!

if you don't have a CFI ticket, maybe pursue that and do some part-time instructing (if your job allows it). This would allow you to sample the civilian sector without having to take a huge plunge giving up your current gig for all those reasons you already mentioned (pension, benefits, stable pay, etc). Keep in mind finding those things in the civilian sector at an entry level job can be hard to come by.

Get to know people at your local dropzone, esp. if you become a skydiver and can meet the owner, if they have a Cessna you maybe able to get a gig parttime flying jumpers, maybe on your days off? Just an idea, you may also find you LOVE skydiving, I have seen many skydivers that are police and a TON that are ex-military. It is worth a shot, also maybe a parachutist club? Its good if you want something on your day off, maybe the full time guy will jump on the chance to get a day off. Where do you live? Also they usually want 500 hrs and 25 in type for the 182's.
