American Eagle Hiring Mins Lowered to 500 hrs

Hey fourm. just wanted to drop in and tell you who's hiring. I'm still in training so this is not for me.lol

American Eagle Airlines is excited to announce that we have adjusted our current hiring minimum. Our hiring goals are expected to exceed 670 pilots in 2011, and we foresee hiring to continue into 2012. Our new hiring minimums are as follows:
  • 500 Total Time with 50 Multi-Engine
  • Successful completion of the Recruitment Process
  • Successful completion of ATP’s Regional Jet Standards Course (Paid in full by American Eagle Airlines)
  • Two year signed commitment to fly for American Eagle Airlines
For pilots who have 800 total time and 100 multi will not be subject to the Regional Jet Standards Course or the signed two year commitment. If you are interested in a pilot position with American Eagle, please email us at [email protected].

Over in the really, really, reallllllly long Eagle post.

I had been hearing and reading since the tail end of last summer that Eagle would never lower their mins below 100 multi because it was demanded of them from their insurance provider. Why the sudden change of heart? I know there are a few things coming up affecting pilot staffing, including:

1. The 1500-hr rule takes effects in 2013
2. Age 65 retirements will be starting in 2012
3. New duty time rules expected out later this year

That said (and I know each of those changes and their associated potential pilot shortages have been discussed heavily in other threads), I'm sure there are plenty of applicants out there with over 100 multi, so why widen the applicant pool?

It's probably something they negotiated involving that RJ course through ATP they'll be sending the low timers to. I figure something along the lines of "well, they'll get X amount of sim time in that RJ course, then we'll give them Y amount of sim time in initial...so by the time they're done they'll have Z 'multi' including sim". Plus, it's an insurance company, you pay them enough and they'll insure anything.

The insurance I carry on my Saratoga can be lowered slightly for attending a WINGS program or similar, and I think many car insurances are the same way with defensive driving (if it wasn't associated with a ticket).

If the minimums weren't good enough, they wouldn't be the minimums....

Until you can't find anyone to work for $1800/month, then you lower them.

The 50 multi is a firm requirement...for now.

While they will become "public" later this year (end of summer possibly?) they wont go into effect for a while, and the "word on the street" is that they will be implemented in stages as to not cause "undue stress" on the airlines....

In other words it aint gonna affect the airlines/pilots for a while. As with any rule change (and any government action for that matter) takes a while to be final....

I ran into a kid the other day who had a job at Air Whiskey a month before he graduated college. Are the regionals already starting to feel the pinch? I imagined they would feel it in a couple of years, but thought they could still have their choice of pilots for the time being?

This is a fairly accurate description. 1500 hiring mins I bet will go active almost immediately, with a grandfather for those who are already in. Duty rules will have to have a trial period with federal oversight. It's going to be at least 12 months before they are the official rules we play by. No one really knows how to build trips or staff for this yet, it takes time. You can't reactionary hire/upgrade for this though. Early next year the wave should begin.
