Texas just had the hottest summer of any state in the union ever! One that I would like to forget. Do you already have to be in the air force?

Reserves hire civilians to go to pilot training all the time. I believe current rules say you must start UPT by the time you're 30. My rough estimate-The interview, medical, screening, officer training, etc that you have to go through first means you should begin the process by roughly 29 or younger (YMMV). That may even be a bit optimistic.

I'm biased, but its a great move for a young guy if he can swing it. Strat air is a great reserve job for building your time before you get the airline job, and an awesome hedge against furlough/income augmenter thereafter.

Good luck to all,

Capt H

Also, you gotta have close to 20/20 eyes too. Not sure of the exact rule now. It goes up and down with supply and demand. The docs are touchy about lasik type stuff so ask about that if applicable.

Sorry to jump your thread Lancer. Hope you don't mind.

If only there was an exception for the college degree... Maybe a meet and greet with the squadron commander to prove that although technically "uneducated," not really stupid either. Plus, I meet all the other requirements ('cept for them tests, but that shouldn't be too hard to knock out).

PRK/Lasik should be ok, as long as you are 20/20 and dont have any wierd side effects. Lasik is a factor for ejection seat aircraft though. I would NOT rec that you go out and get it just for the job though, they might do it for you. USAF did it for me (PRK).

C5 in SAT would be sweet, no doubt. Reserves? Icing on the cake! I think the schoolhouse is at SKF also??

I'm rt up the road at RND. Love this city, but traffic SUCKS!

I applied to an AF Reserve C-5 Unit in Mass last September. I'm a current and qualified Navy Reservist flying DC-9s. I was interviewed in early Jan, hired late Jan, began the recruiter transition process in Feb, FULL AF Medical in May, Medically cleared in July, and as of today my Aviation Winging Transition package is awaiting approval at headquarters. This is a process. Not to discourage anyone, because flying FRED is the best job in the AF Reserve, it's 40 minutes from my house and the squadron is great. GO FOR IT!!! Just be prepared to wade through the process.

Not a sq requirement, its an AF requirement. All AF officers must have a 4 year college degree and all AF pilots must be commissioned officers, thus the 4 year degree is a requirement. Finish college and go for it.
