$$$$ Expectations at EK
My husband has an interview coming up with EK. We are wondering how realistic it would be to save money each month. We expect to pay for school tuition, car, insurance, phone, tv and food/shopping.
We understand it's not all about the money. We're just running numbers and seeing if this possible move would make financial sense. Thanks! RJCaptwife |
How many children do you have and what age are they? Must you send them to one of the American Schools or would you be happy with one of the International or British Schools ( much lower cost )? Do you need a 42 inch LCD TV and a brand new Toyota Landcruiser to be happy or could you settle for a 32 inch LCD and a Ford Exploder? Must you eat out every meal of the day or would one or two nights out per week suffice? Will you keep a home in the States without renting it out? 5 star vacations to Europe necessary or would camping in Oman be okay? These and many more questions like them will determine your ability to save money? No answer fits all people.

Research, research, research
I have spent much time in the middle east and, like you, EK caught my attention. I would have considered it much more if I was able to go there as a DEC. I am not saying I am all too cool to fly as an FO again, but the financial side suggested CA's lead a pretty good life. FO's lead a pretty good life if they are single and have no children or other financial obligations. Do not count on the high # of aircraft they are taking delivery of, as the number of DEC's are just as high. I took much of my information from www.pprune.com. It was very resourceful and many EK pilots there seemed more than happy to offer their two cents worth. Good luck!

Here is some info that should be considered concerning health care.

Thanks for the advice.
We've been reading as much as possible from this forum, pprune and others and have made our decision to stay here and not attend the interview. Although no airline will ever be "perfect", we've come to realize that the grass may not be greener in the desert. |
