Hageland, PenAir, Grant, ACE = ALASKA
I have some time in Southeast Alaska flying a "six". I need some opinions on which "full time" air carrier in Alaska is the best. From what I gather is:
Hageland
-Has a great schedule 2 weeks on 2 weeks off.
-Does Hageland have jumpseat privs?
-How is the pay?
-Maintanance on aircraft?
-Does the C207 fly IFR? My biggest complaint about S/E Alaska was we were 135 Day VFR no Approaches and we could sure use them.
Penair-
-10 on 5 off schedule.
-Jumps on Alaska
-Pay???
-IFR on the PA32?
Grant-
-20 on 10 off.
-Flys C207 and C208
I don't know much more about them except I'd be stuck in Bethel.
ACE-
Beech 1900
I heard upgrade time is years if at all.
I am not a time builder but I do need to feed my family.
-Pay?
MOST IMPORTANT IS QUALITY OF LIFE!
Any information would be great.

i work for PenAir
it is the best in my opinion the upgrade time to a SAAB or Metro living in anchorage is about 2-3 years on a 4 on and 3 off schedule it may be quicker in the near future as we are getting our 8th SAAB soon with a new hire class now scheduled for february interviews start soon
the 135 operation has a variety of aircraft and schedules depending on the base and time of year
pay is slightly above average

Where could a new Penair pilot expect to be based?
Please check my thinking here.
I would assume a new pilot would start in a bush community such as Bethel or Dillingham.
Starting in a Six for about a year then upgrading into a Caravan or Navajo for a couple more years. Then upgrade into a Saab. (Saab upgrade is to FO or Capt???) The Saab is based in Anchorage.
How is Anchorage to live in? I have a family that would have to relocate.
One more thing. My college Degree has not been completed. I am getting close though. Is that a problem for PenAir???
Thanks for your help.

if you want to make more money then king salmon or dillingham flying the saratoga's
if you want to live in anchorage FO on either the SAAB or Metro
you may still have to go to king or dillingham for PIC time before captain on the 121 planes
anchorage is like any other city in the US with a longer winter not necessarily colder but definatly longer

Does Penair ask where you'd like to be based? I don't know much about S/W Alaska but I think King Salmon would be neat. Very Small, like Skagway where I flew before.
185Flyer where have you been based and where are you now?
What is the pay for a Six driver? or better yet what is a pay overview for the whole fleet?
Thanks a million you Penair guys have been great on this forum!

To Flyingguide
Did I read right you are instructing at KRYN? For IATA? Jean Marc Eloy? How is that working out for you? I flew at their base in Glendale back in 1999/2000 before they moved to KRYN. Small World.
One of our IATA instructors from that time is in Alaska flying B1900. I don't know where though.

Lanesuzza,
It is a small world. IATA is pretty good. Lots of hours!!! I have to turn students away because I am too tired to fly.
Have you applied to any of these companies yet? Who did you work for out of Skagway?

I took 6 months off from flying at the beginning of 2006.
(I had a bad experience with a certain regional airline)
I was hired at a flight school in June, since then I have been flying my A** off and I have my old flying chops back. I haven't sent PenAir my resume yet. I am really interested. I need to get the family situation figured out. It is harder to make a move for a married guy with kids.
Quality of Life and a good company are my #1 and #2 issues. It seems that PenAir is tops with their employees and that says more than any company recruiter ever could.
How many hours do you have?
I am over 1700 TT and still rolling the hours up. I think I'd be a good fit for PenAir and I like smaller towns.
