As part of a group within Bombardier Flight Test Center, which is responsible for Bombardier test programs, the Sr. Engineering Test Pilot is responsible for conducting test operations on aerospace vehicles for the purpose of research, development and certification.

Your mission will be to work in a multi-disciplined Integrated Product Development Team; Develop Certification Test Procedures; Conduct development tests on Simulation Test Rigs; and participate in a validation test program leading to aircraft Type Certification.

As a Senior Engineering Flight Test Pilot, you will be required to:

- Provide technical expertise related to flight test and aircraft operational issues in support of design development activities.
- Work closely with Flight Test Engineers assigned to their aircraft. Oversees and audits the technical content of all test procedures
- Provide technical leadership as project pilot to other test pilots assigned to the same flight test program. Provide the central point of contact for all pilot/operational issues throughout the program. Responsible for presenting the coordinated BFTC position on these issues
- Review and provide inputs for flight manuals, flight manual supplements, pilot manuals and other technical engineering reports. Often is assigned as a focal 'Project Pilot' for a product line or model.
- Conduct briefing for company management reviews, FAA, Transport Canada and other foreign Certification Authorities or groups as necessary.
- Provides direct liaison with test pilot groups in FAA/Transport Canada on specific technical or schedule issues.
- Conduct developmental and certification flight tests on experimental airplanes.

Qualifications

As our ideal candidate, you meet the following requirements:

- You hold a Bachelor's Degree in an engineering or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- You must hold the appropriate US or Canadian Airline Transport Pilot License ATP/ATPL or attain within 6 months of hire.
- You hold a First Class FAA medical or equivalent.
- You have a practical experience in flight test techniques, procedures and requirements.
- You have a minimum of five (5) years' experience in experimental flight test as the test pilot (PIC).
- You have strong communication skills (written and spoken).
- You have a minimum of 2000 hours including 500 hours of turbine powered flight experience as pilot.
- You are able and willing to work with irregular hours and work days. You are able to travel on short notice.
- You possess interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a variety of individuals, departments and organization.
- You have practical experience with FAA, Transport Canada, and JAA Certification processes and procedures.
- You demonstrate the highest standards of integrity.

Additional desired/preferred qualifications

- You are a graduate of an accredited test pilot school (USAF, Navy, French, Empire or National Test Pilot School NTPS ).
- 2000 hours PIC and 1000 hours of turbine powered flight experience as pilot.
- You hold a Bachelors or Masters of Science degree in engineering or related discipline.
- You have prior experience as DER (FAA Designated Engineering Representative) / UM / DAD Test Pilot.
- You have previous experience with Bombardier products.

If you have every one of these desired qualifications, then you are one of a very select few people.

I made it to a phone interview with Bombardier for an Engineering Test Pilot position. I met the minimum quals and have a background in systems test flight but am not a formally educated test pilot. The test pilots were not impressed with my experience and I was not considered further.

The HR recruiter I talked with said they can't get any test pilots willing to relocate to Wichita. After spending three weeks there at Flightsafety, I can understand why. That said, you could use that to your advantage when it comes to salary negotiation.

Absolutely, if you have the full NTPS certificate in particular you are golden. Cessna was training test pilots from scratch for a while, and all the jet manufacturers in town cultivate talent from within to some degree, but none of them can afford to drop $1M to send someone to full test pilot school as long as there is any hope of finding someone who is ready made. Since most or all NTPS pilots are former military people, it is another way the government funds private industry when you think about it.

I hear ya. What was told to me by HR didn't seem to jive with the tone of the phone interview. HR sounded desperate to get anyone in who could just spell test pilot. The hiring managers...not so much. Even though the job description was written as a "entry level" position, they seemed to want quite a bit more than was advertised. On top of that, they did not understand, and I struggled to translate my military experience to them. FWIW.
