Maybe people should stop talking about the profession/the job like it is has easy as pie and others won't think that a 'monkey' could do the job.
I'm not really responsible for what other have to say.
I think it's a free forum and everyone can say what they want, unfortunaltely, but the ones that say that being an airline pilot is just about swinging the gear don't respect the very same job they do.
Please note that I don't talk abou PIC or SIC, regional or major, but I talk about being an AIRLINE PILOT!!!

I agree......so you should call your fellow AIRLINE PILOTS out on degrading the importance job when you see it , not just when someone reiterates what others (who are actually doing the job) are putting out.

I surely will,
I just haven't met anyone in my company degrading what they do.
Commuting, jump seating, crash pad, 18 days a month a way from the families, no matter if you are Capt or FO, the quality of life and the sacrifices you do are the same.
I haven't find anyone that can summarize their job in "slamming the gear", yet.
About the one that reiterates someone else bs, they don't deserve my time.
They express opinion about something that they have never done!

Self explanatory!

Much of the use of a forum is often suppose to be about learning.
If you are being 'taught' something about the business by those actually doing the job and you don't have any reason to not believe that they are portraying the truth about the profession then why wouldn't they reiterate the things that they have 'learned' from the forum?

For the simple reason that I don't take lesson by person that are not in the business but just report things on a forum because they have talk to someone who knows somebody who said something...
Be in a regional and than I'll listen what you have to say.
I cannot confirm the "slamming the gear story" because, where I work, I haven't heard anybody saying that.

What do you mean for the one that really do the job? Who are they?

This question comes up on these forums from time to time and I guess I've been wanting to say something myself about this debate, so here it goes. Build the resume you want to build. If you want to be in your interview in X years at ABC major, would you rather want to be explaining your turboprop/GLA/Ameriflight TPIC or do you want to be telling stories of your glass/fo/"gear slinging" time. I spent the longest time stressing about what I should do and in the end I went with my gut and thus far have never been happier... But then again my story has yet to be written, so we'll see how I feel about it in the end I guess. Maybe spend some time talking to recruiters at your final airline goal and see what they say about it. It might make you feel better about your decision.

As for chasing and upgrade, recruiters make no promises. Just because the picture looks like one thing today, it will definitely look something different tomorrow. That is true at any and all airlines I've ever seen. 12 month upgrades become indefinite and 7 year upgrades have been known to plummet, or take longer. It's a bold promise to name great lakes and assume upgrade will be any given time there. But it's a truth to the pattern that the worse a place is to work for, the faster upgrade comes.. best of luck in any choice you make.

"Gear slinger" and other "derogatory" terms to fo's are meant by me in a humourous fashion. But I find the job is a lot less stressful when you aren't signing for the plane than when you are.

Usual forum stuff: carry on.

I know multiple people who were hired at regionals in the last year that had nothing but piston time. Airlines included Commute Air (x2), Republic (x2), Piedmont (x3) and one at PSA.
