moving question
I'm currently a regional captain, living in base (not a hub for for a major). Thinking about moving to a hub, and commuting.
Would this help me get hired at a major? I tend to not meet that may mainline pilots, and hoping being in a hub would help. Thanks |
If you think your ticket to hiring in is networking your way into the seat, then yes, it would. That won't get you hired, however. Personally, I wouldn't move unless the move benefitted me in terms of a shorter commute, or some other improvement in quality of life.
Moving is a big hassle. It's time and expense, forwarding mail, deposits, uhauls, and all that. If the move is for work (hope of work, not so much), fine. If it's to allow less time getting back and forth to work, great. If it's to be nearer relatives, or a dozen other legitimate reasons to relocate, dandy. Living in a large city doesn't mean you'll be networking more; if that's the goal, spend more time during your commute hanging out and schmoozing. Personally, I don't do that and never have, but if you think you need it in your career, you can do it all day long without needing to move your residence. Do what's best for you. I surely wouldn't make the move for that reason, though. |
The only airline I can think of that would look favorably on you for living in their base is Hawaiian. All the others could care less.

I'm not on property any more, and I only have that at the rumor level.... |

Assuming you have wife/kids, I wouldn't do it for that reason unless you really want to live there anyway.
If you're single...your call. But if you do it, go somewhere you'll meet folks from a variety of airlines (ex Chicago). |
Start with something less drastic, career fairs could help you more.
