UPS and Alaska

In case you haven't heard, UPS is sending new hire FO's to the MD11 in their new Anchorage base. If you live, or want to live in Anchorage, that would probably be a big plus for you. Of course, in addition to other experience, MD11, or other heavy, or international, could all be additional helpers.

My desire to live in the Anchorage Bowl will never go away. Maybe that demand will be there in 10 years once I can actually meet the mins to apply lol. I miss living there alot, that was a great 6 years at Elmendorf. I lived in Anchorage, Wasilla, and Eagle River over my time there.

Getting to ANC is never a problem, it usually bids very junior here at FDX. We started putting new hires up there too. I would think the same thing will happen too at UPS over time, it would be very easy to get if one wants to fly and/or live there.

Hold me a spot Hawg, 6 more yrs until retirement. But, if I have my way, I'll be PCSing back to EDF in a year or two!

Getting to ANC is only a problem if you commute. Offline jumpseats are very competitive.

SEA - ANC is silly. I picked a flt with 40 open seats, show up at the gate and I am told I am #45 on the list. Two flights later I get a seat.
This was late Feb. I can see having problems in the summer but not in Feb.
There can't be that many commuters.

Actually, there are. Factor in all the Alaska, FedEx, UPS and Northwest commuters. Then add in the basic Alaska non-revs, remembering that CASS access is DEAD last on the list. Oh, and the fact that NWA pilots have an upgraded code that gets them on before other non-revs due to the Alaska/NWA codeshare agreement. Its a tough commute Spring, Summer, and Fall. And don't forget Thanksgiving/Xmas/Spring Break, too.

Hawg, I've followed a few of your posts lately. I've wanted to live there since I was a kid. This summer, my wife and I are leaving AD and heading to ANC to find a place to settle. We might end up in Fairbanks too...who knows. Where are you living now? There's no place I'd rather be.

Bone why do you think ANC is a Junior crew domicile for FedEx and now UPS?

Answer: If you don't want to live there (majority don't) it is Pure He!! to commute. Offline out of SEA? If AS has an a flight with too many open seats, the FLT always seems to get canceled or Delayed and the PAX get rolled over to the next flight which is always oversold. I'm lucky, every time I commute to/from ANC it is on a Company Paid ticket and I do it quite often from LAX.

If you work for FedEx, yes you can book the Jumpseat but, unless you live in OAK, MEM or IND, you need to jumpseat from your home city into one of these hubs and then fly all night up to ANC thus Killing 1 1/2 days of free time. You need to do the same thing coming home from a trip , thus killing another day. If you have 3 trips that month, you just killed 6 days of your Free time. I assume it is the Same for UPS.

ANC is certainly a beautiful place to live, but it is not for everyone. Personally I would love live there because I would be Senior and wouldn't have to commute. Only problem is my better half says "She'd miss me", translation..I couldn't afford it!

RedeyeAV8r,

It's a shame that your better half wouldn't want to go to ANC. I did C-130's there for 3 years and my wife and I both want to go back. If you really want to go, just take her there in summer on vacation....ANC will do the rest.
