Default MFR commuting

Good evening, I figured you guys would know best.

Im at Skywest possibly moving back to Medford, was interest how the commute to PDX would be? how often would i be up against commuters going north in the morning and south in the evenings? also interested in employee parking if anyone knows anything, i called the parking company but they dont offer anything.

Any insight is appreciated

Commuting to/from MFR sucks because the trips out of that base are not commutable. 4am shows and 12am releases. A lot of people try and get down on the last flight the night before their trip starts. Maybe some active commuters on here can chime in.

The company will pay for 1 parking pass in any of our bases.

Ok, I left MFR six months ago for the great igloo in the sky, but:
I commuted from PDX, five flights a day, six in the summer, since the base opened. (That’s probably down one or two now.) I really never had any problems. Yes, once in a while, you’re going to get bumped, (not me), but overall, it was pretty good, (better than PDX-SEA).
Great people there, and a great base. CSA’s, FA’s, pilots, everybody. (Seriously, I’d consider living there.)
Whether or not the *****’s running the AG decide to keep it open or not long-term is an open question, though.

(Oh, parking is $50- per quarter now. Payable upstairs at MFR ops.)

After they threw away the daily MFR-LAX flight, I lost ALL confidence in them. That was a gold mine, and SEA ran away from it. Idiots.

Tippy,

At the present time, we have five flights a day from Medford to Portland and four flights from Medford to Seattle. There's a couple of things you need to consider:

(1) Other commuters. We used to have a whole bunch of pilots commuting to or from Medford, but this number has dropped off considerably in the last couple of years. Most of the Medford pilots and flight attendants now live in base.

(2) Weather. As you already know, Medford can get days (weeks) of dense fog during the winter. Our schedule can go from five flights a day to one or two a day.

If you're flying to Portland, your best bet could be either the last flight of the day, or the first. If you're doing an early morning trip, I'd plan on going up the day before. In other words, you need a crash pad or hotel.

For Portland to Medford, the earliest flight of the day is usually wide open. It's also likely to be cancelled if the weather is crappy in Medford. Again, if you finish a trip in the evening, you'll need some place to stay overnight before you can get out in the morning.

Thanks DA, this is what i was concerned about the amount of commuters.
The WX is just a variable to be dealt with anywhere.

Like I said just looking at options. Not sure if i am moving back but it is a possibility. Also havent ruled out jumping ship to QX if I do, But have also heard the chatter of MFR base closing...
