Accepted a CJO with Horizon and will be going with Galvin out of Boeing Field. Will be using public transportation and am currently looking at some studio type apartments in the area. Anyone here with some knowledge or experience about which bus/train/routes or decent places to look at staying for 4-5 months? I figured there would be some good options utilizing the public transportation system in a city like Seattle.

Well, the LINK will take you anywhere along a line between the UW to the north and Angle Lake to the South, and one of the stations is walkable to Galvin, although UBER or a bus transfer might be a better idea unless you really want to get in shape. The difficulty is the cost of housing.

Studios anywhere north of BFI are going to be expensive - about 1400 a month for a 400ish square foot studio. They also have something called aPODments which are basically a common area shared with other residents and your own bedroom and toilet, although those ain't cheap either.

And a lot of both of those are going to require annual leases. Further south (down around Angle Lake) there might be some a little cheaper but I'm still not sure about short term. Renton or Kent might work too, although that would complicate the public transportation issue somewhat.

Or - and this is just a wild hair - ask Horizon If you Could use their contract for an extended stay hotel at their corporate rate, which would probably be no more expensive than a studio in much of the town.

I've been using this site. It's really good. Shows apartments by commute time and transportation type. Might help you filter a bit. As for public trans, you probably would just have to compare transit maps to each area. Good luck with training!

What fixed wing ratings do you have? If you're starting from scratch 4-5 months is very optimistic and I would plan on being at Galvin for at least 6-7 months.

As for using public transit, it's pretty good but can get time consuming if you have to make a lot of transfers. The most time-efficient way to get around is to take a bus to a stop near where you want to go and walk the rest of the way. The closest bus stop to Galvin is a little over a mile away.

An Orca card is the easiest way to pay for transit, and works on just about everything.

For places to live definitely spend some time studying the transit maps. This is a good resource:

But keep in mind that it takes you to the closest stop, which is not always the quickest way to get where you're going. As an example, my bus has a stop a block away from the closest stop to BFI but the planner tells me to stay on the bus while it tours the neighborhood. I save 10 minutes by getting off at the further stop. Same thing at night when I go downtown, the planner will have me wait 20 minutes for a transfer bus to get me to the ferry, when I can walk down to the dock in 15 minutes.

Anyways, generally the further out you go the cheaper rent gets. But the tradeoff is time spent commuting. If you're not bringing a car I recommend the shortest commute you can afford.

Good info. The RTP program is brand new and the training outline is saying about 6 months (sooner if I'm open to taking the late or early flights that nobody wants). Looks like I'm more likely to drive myself from Alaska for the duration of my time. That will open up more places for me to live. Found a few small studios for under a grand which is the goal. Looking forward to getting started down there.

If you start in let’s say April or May and fly your rear end off until October it may be doable. Any other time of the year you’re dealing with weather that is not friendly to VFR time building. I know first hand, took me an extra year to get all the ratings because of weather

That's a good point. If your going over the winter and don't want to take the chance of wasting any time, you could check out one of the flight academies in socal or Arizona or Florida. Like atp
