Horizon Upgrade and Work Rules
#21
I just got done listening to a Horizon presentation from the Chief Pilot, LaMar. Horizon is doing the direct hire here at CWU tomorrow and they gave a very nice presentation on the company and career's at Horizon. If anyone is interested in more detail feel free to PM me. Overall I learned alot about the company and where they are headed as far as a single plane fleet, pay, training, the direct hire with Alaska and the reason for lowering their mins.

I know fairly young guys there who had every intention of going to the majors when they joined QX who have lost all motivation to try for it after subsisting on FO wages for years and then finally getting to the left seat. It's like the thought of going through all that again - another pay cut, another lengthy right-seat sit - is just too much hassle. That's their right, mind you. I just didn't want to become them in another 5 years.
All in all AS and QX are great places for us career PNW'ers or transplants who fall in love with the area and don't want to leave. The area is growing every day and SEA certainly isn't getting any less busy.

May I retort?
I came from AE to QX due to not having to commute. Alaska treated me well getting to and from work. It is just a whole different culture. Yes management is management and they will generally have the same menality but flying in the NW, living 30 mins from SEA (even though I got PDX), and having a much better QOL is what has turned me on. What I wanted to do was get SEA and bid reserve so I could be home as much as possible.
Looking at the Dash schedules, WOW, they work you hard. Hopefully with the 70 newhires coming onboard by April they can help you out.

My buddy was a captain out of SEA and bid reserve. He was making over 90K just being on reserve. I figure if he was still around that they would be using him but it sounds like he didn't have it bad there for a while.

Well i'm sure thats what someone is thinking when they ask what kind of trips can they expect. People want to here the truth, like you can expect to work 6 days in a row with 2 days off then 5 days in a row with another two days off. Dont paint a picture of a happy guy going to sleep in his bed and just loving life. Tell them about 400+ hour away from base and the fact they probably wont be able to make much more than min gauarantee per bid because of the way our lines are created.
I routinely worked 3 on, 4 off, did bid after bid of only day-trips, had lines of 17-20 days off (17 typical, 20 occasional). That info is just as pertinent as the worst case, woe-is-me version you provide (without the inaccuracy of telling somebody that they will be out bouncing around the system for 6 days without coming home). I hate to break it to you, but things really are that good in the jet, which could well be where this guy or gal ends up.

You've been here since the F28 so i doubt you are bidding any trip with 5 or 6 on. A new guy probably wont see a regular line for a while, a good 6 to 8 montsh. There are a lot of guys that never get what they bid for so they end up with those 5 or 6 day on with 2 days off line. Dont tell someone on here how great you schedule is. You've probably been with the company for a good 8.5 to 9 years so of course you have the blanket over you eyes when it comes to things like this. Show some of the crappy schedules like what the guys in the 200 have. Have you looked on the union forum lately to see how many people are saying how defecaty their QOL has been due to the schedule. Things might be that good on the jet but more than likely that person may not be hired into the jet.
You said we have 5 and 6 day trips. How is that helpful to somebody seeking info?

An audience member asked what the possibility was of a single plane fleet. The response was along the lines of how economical the Q400 is and it would make alot of sense so move that way. But then again some of the longer/shorter routes were undergoing study's to see if one plane could do it all. It was a very generic response which gave me the impression that it’s only an idea being tossed around.
Could you please ellaborate on what the company is selling for their single fleet plan. I know all of us have expected the single fleet type and there have been all sorts of rumors I just didn't know the company is already out advertising it. Did I miss something or is the company telling everyone outside the company we are gonna be all Q4's and not offically telling the current employees.
