Horizon

Any news over at Horizontal... Havn't heard anything in about 2 week?

Parking all remaining Q200s in OCT. Offering early out packages, that are a total joke, to senior RJ captains. They are planning to cut operations just like everyone else this fal, 13% reduction in departures in the Fall schedule. No actual furloughs announced, but I wouldn't doubt if they have an excess of pilots come OCT. The only good news, the RJs might be around a little longer than originally planned.

No official announcement yet, however the VP of Flight Ops yesterday said the number of furloughs will be 87 beginning in November.

Two words: Not Good.

Check Horizon Employee web. Its posted there.

Basically 87 furloughs starting in November.

Okay here I'll post it

"Fall Reduction Projection
Hello again. We’ve been working over the last several weeks to process the fall schedule, and generate training and staffing plans to match. We’re still working several areas to reduce both furloughs and downgrades (more on that below), but based on our best projection, including forecast attrition assumptions, we now intend to reduce the pilot group by 87 pilots beginning in the fall. While this isn’t the official notice required by the agreement, we believe the timing will be as follows:
  • November: 41 pilots
  • December: 21 pilots
  • January: 15 pilots
  • February: 10 pilots
Exact dates within those months will be finalized closer in, but for now it would be safe to presume the first of each calendar month.

As I said, we’re still working to minimize those numbers. We have recently announced the early-out option for CRJ captains, and are discussing even more creative solutions with the EXCO. While we have had differences of opinion of various subjects over the years, minimizing the effects of furloughs and downgrades of our pilots is a subject that both teams are passionate about, and are working together to find solutions. I very much appreciate the efforts of both the EXCO and Chief Pilot’s office, and look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks.

I’ll be in the SEA crew lounge tomorrow, and have time scheduled in PDX next week, to answer any questions or discuss any issues. Of course, I’ll take any questions via this site, First Class, email, phones, or drive-by’s in the interim.

We continue to operate a safe and reliable airline for our customers, with our June statistics second only to Hawaiian Airlines. I very much appreciate all of your efforts."

Sorry to hear the bad news, Qx'ers. For what it is worth, it seems like every company is furlouging in the 10-20% range. Those furloughing only 10% are likely to have a Round 2 of furloughs. The majors are cutting their capacity by 10-20%, their workforces by 10-20%, and therefore it should be no surprise that those numbers have trickled down to the regional carriers as well. My company is doing it, too. For those who work at companies that have not yet announced furloughs, prepare yourselves. The bottom 20% should really look to making a plan B. With any luck, you all at SkyWest and ASA may dodge the furlough bullet, but you would be foolish to plan on no furloughs. The majors are going to keep cutting, and in absence of an actual NWA/DAL merger here real soon, I expect the hurt will be felt at the NWA express carriers too. Lets just do what we can to take care of our fellow pilots, and lets hope none of the legacies go tango uniform. If that happens, things are going to get real ugly.

FlyAK 07-18-2008 10:41 AM

Do you guys think this is all there will be, or will there be another round later next spring sometime?

kersplatt 07-18-2008 11:18 AM

My prediction is round 2 will be companies folding left and right. The first one to go will be Frontier. It is sad, but they are barely hanging on. Even if fuel drops to $100 a barrel, it is still more than it should be and this weak economy can't sustain it.

FL410 07-18-2008 01:46 PM

Add me to the list, I will wait until furlough then most likely not come back. It is hard to see, esspecially when it comes to having a family, morgage, student loads, car payment, ect... The flying is great, crews are a blast and schedules suck. Good luck to all.

Does anyone still have a copy of the training contract they had us sign in intial training. I misplaced mine during my move and would like one for my own file

Thanks

Sadly, I think the first to go will be Midwest. TPG’s doing a better job of running their airline into the ground.

It's more like you leave and then get your PIC time!

Sak23 07-20-2008 06:53 PM

Absolutely right.
If Ameriflight was still hiring. A little BE99 'turbine' PIC time and my thousands of worthless SIC hours might equal a job at Trader Joe's by the end of next year! Horizon was never about upgrading for me. It was about NOT commuting. Nobody expected to upgrade in 4 years, but we did expect to upgrade in less than 10. Good luck with that now.
