Default Colgan vs. Horizon

Howdy all!
First, I'll point out the obvious. I'm REAL new at this (thus the name).

I'm starting to gear-up for my run at airline employment. I understand that I'll probably be a good candidae for regionals (eventually).

The two I've found that interest me most, are Colgan and Horizon.

A buddy who's with Masaba says Horizon has awful "work rules". I'm such a newb, I dont even know what "work rules" are.

Can anybody give me their 2-cents on Colgan vs. Horizon?

Naturally, I'll be applying EVERYWHERE when the time comes. But I was hoping to start gathering some intel along the path.

Thanks all. Safe Skies to ya.

C.

QX has over 100 on furlough. I would not worry about them for a really long time. Sorry.

Just read all the other 100 threads about Colgan, that'll pretty much give you an idea. You may want expand your options.

Expand my options? Heck I'm willing hold a chicken in each hand and jump off a roof if it'll get me in the air.

I'm no brand-snob. Like I said, I'll be applying everywhere. I wont turn my nose up at anybody.

I was simply seeking to compare those two as they were the ones that most interested me.

Now I know Horizon is not an option. I'll start reading about colgan.

First off, THAT IS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST QUOTES I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!!!

Second, The rest of what you said is the reason the airline industry sucks. Make an informed decision before applying everywhere. Know where you want to work. Horizon has some great work rules but they have a 1,000 year upgrade time now with all the guys on furlough.

Make an informed decision based on pay, work rules, bases and upgrade time. No one can write all of these into a single thread so read up, learn and then apply.

I completely agree. That is precisely why I joined the forum....to read-up and become informed.

So far....my efforts to make an informed decision.... tell me to run as far and as fast as I can from aviation and start flipping burgers at McD's.

I know that demographically speaking....happy pilots dont post. Which means that unhappy pilots use the forums as a pulpit. But DANG! If things are half as bad as they seem to be why does ANYBODY do it? I'm being serious...not sarcastic. Why?

Is it just to wear a white shirt? Gotta be. If the pay is that bad....and the benes are that bad...and the management is that bad....and the schedules are that bad...and the safety issues are that bad...and the hotel cable is that bad....and the crew-shuttle deodorizer is that bad....

Why?

I've been reading this forum for about a week now....like I said, I AM A COMPLETE NEWB!!!! Admitted... Acknowldeged... I got nothing to fight with.

But in that week, I've read a lot.... a whole lot.... a S---load of posts and threads.

NOT ONE HAD ANYTHING POSITIVE TO SAY ABOUT FLYING FOR A LIVING. Not a single post. Not a single comment.

Frankly, I'm more willing to give up on aviation after reading all this than I was when they pulled me out of the wreckage of my 182 and made my underwear famous on CNN.

I mean....seriously..... WHY?

(now....as for the chickens....I am so thankful for having my MEL. When I was just a SEL I had to strap em to my head to avoid asymetric thrust/drag. And that was just....messy. And we dont even wanna talk about center-line thrust...ouch)

Don't get me worng, I am a happy pilot, and enjoy the career, even though I am furloughed.

These forums can be VERY VERY negative. If you want a good conversation with someone who has seen some* of the BS this industry has to offer and still likes** it, get a few more posts and shoot me a PM.

* I said some, not all.
** I said likes, not loves.
