Horizon

Is Horizon hiring for a specific aircraft like the CRJ or if I interviewed with them is it possible I'd be placed in any of them?

Velocipede 11-25-2006 08:51 AM

Any of them. And getting the CRJ right out of the box is highly doubtful, especially with the F9 contract closing. The CRJ is the senior airplane at QX. If you do get it, you'll be on reserve until you look like my avatar.

CWU1919 11-25-2006 11:11 AM

last time i checked it is just the q400 and crj no more q200 hiring.

Not exactly. Hiring plans are for the Dash-8's right now but many of the current RJ FO's are going to upgrade next year, as well as a good amount of attrition in the FO ranks. This would require some RJ FO's to be hired early next year. The company tends to award the RJ to applicants with the highest sim score from the interview.

With the new service that is starting out of LAX does that means that they will have a base there as well?

Highly doubtful. It has been a rumor for some time, but nothing more than that.

dash trash 11-28-2006 10:36 AM

thank you sir, may I have another?

clear as mud..... your guess is as good as anyone. That said, this is a mute point. If you are offered the job, you say "Thank you, where do you want me?" Are you really going to turn the job down if they make you fly a lowly turboprop?

Velocipede 11-28-2006 10:52 AM

Lowly?

The QX Dash 8-400s have most, if not all, of current cutting edge technology. The only difference is that the "fan" only has 6 blades.

crjav8er 11-28-2006 11:23 AM

With the exception of the wx radar. Hence the arrival of EFB's in the Q400 first.

That's right! And if you are going to be surly about your aircraft assignment, then PLEASE GO ELSEWHERE! Not saying that's you, but there are some out there!

Oh, and dash trash? It's a 'MOOT' point! :)

dundem 11-28-2006 03:35 PM

What, if any, are the min days off for a new-hire F/O?

Is it a reserve line and if so, how long is the wait now to become a line holder?

I'm glad you made that comment. I made a point the other day and someone got mad at me about how some people out there that think they are too good to fly a turbo-prop.

Joey: Yeah, it's like a cow's opinion. It just doesn't matter. It's moo.

To you current or post Horizon guys~

I'm in the January class at Trans States and have an interview next week with Piedmont. Assuming I'm offered a position with PDT, which route might be more beneficial and/or more appealing to those looking to hire at Horizon a year or so down the road? Basically, is it turboprop or turbojet? I know PDT is a Dash fleet, which might come in handy out there at PDX. I was lucky enough to intern with Alaska a while back and have been really interested in QXE ever since. All opinions welcome...thanks!

If you want to come to Horizon, then come now. Don't make a lateral move in a year or so. As far as being appealing, just ensure you have the minimums. We are having a hard time filling interview slots because of the high upgrade time. QX doesn't really care what A/C you have been flying, just that you are not a complete tool. Submit your resume here, you will probably be called if you have the minimums (especially if you have a 4 yr degree, they get off on that).

flyguy8307 11-30-2006 10:49 AM

Upgrades still sitting around 6 years?

Trust me, if I had the time right now, I would be at Horizon's doorstep! I have the 4-year degree...just waiting on the other side of things to come around now....hopefully no more than 6-8 months. I assume you're at QXE now? How has your experience been thus far?

I am confused. How can you be in a class for TSA and not have QX minimums? TSA minimums are higher than QX.

QX is great if you want to live in the NW, and have decent pay and work rules. If you want to upgrade fast go elsewhere. The 401 (k) can't be beat with an outstanding company match.

Well I'm a college grad and luckily come from a 4-year aviation program. We have "bridge" programs (if you call it that), kinda like UND has with QXE, that allow interviews with lower-than-normal mins. As of now, I'm sitting at a little over 500TT. Upgrade isn't a huge concern there, considering the quality of life would make up in that department. What are current mins there?

Hey Flyguy,

I was at PDT for about 8 months before I made the "lateral" move to QX. The reason for the quotation is that moving to Horizon from Piedmont(or most other regionals) is hardly a lateral move, but rather a move up. Horizon's commitment to the newest technologies, highest pay amongst regionals, and 401K(Free money) are the reason most Captains have chosen to stay and retire at QX.

When I applied and interviewed I really didn't have a preference of which aircraft I wanted to be in. I just wanted the job to have a better quality of life(ie, wife/family is in WA). I am proud to be able to fly the Q400 in the area of the country.

There are people at QX who have come from other regionals with a lot of 121 time who were assigned to the Q2, and even the Q4. So regardless of past experience, you will never know what aircraft you'll get.

flyguy8307 12-01-2006 03:35 PM

I gotta say, even in the short exposure I had to Horizon when I was out there a year ago, I loved every minute of it. While I don't have family luring me out that direction, the company alone is enough!

Check6 - how was the transition trainingwise from Piedmont to Horizon? Also, what are current mins looking like there now?

Wouldn't it be cool if that was the real meaning? That line cracked me up, too!

waflyboy 12-02-2006 06:46 PM

Hey folks,

I just got hired with Horizon and will be in the next Q200 class. I had a great time visiting their operations center in Portland and met some terrific people. Didn't even think twice about accepting the job, even though I've been sitting on offers from two other companies.

PDX here I come!

JetJock16 12-02-2006 06:54 PM

Congrats, Q200's a good airplane. Slow but very good. I fly the PDX/GEG/SFO system a LOT with SKW and I love that part of the country. Enjoy your new position.

QCappy 12-02-2006 11:43 PM

Congratulations. I've been flying the Q200 for over 7 years and still love the airplane.

....It's only slow because it's always full!!;)

LOL.....Keep telling yourself that!;) Why would they waste a good sim score on somebody who is going to fly ILSs all day long? I think they would be more inclined to put a better stick into an airplane that is going to circle at 500 feet in a snowstorm....like I did the other day.

Circling at 500 feet in a snowstorm!?! Sounds like fun! Are you with QX? If so, what do you think the chances are of me getting based in SEA? I hear most Q200 drivers go to PDX.....

Yes I am. Your chances of getting Seattle are 0. Sorry:(

Do you really have to ask that question? Common sense is not allowed on "Mohogany Row." Besides, it is not like the interview sim acts like a real airplane.

Although I do agree that the Dash pilots fly MUCH harder days.

Then can I trade with a buddy who's been assigned the Q400? :)

Just kiddin'. Doesn't matter - either way I'm forward to getting started.

Congrats. You will like it here. You can taste the kool aid, just don't drink too much....
