Well, to my knowledge... once the company awards you something, they'd have to run a system-wide displacement bid to get you out of it. So they may have desperately wanted him someplace else, but it would require him to volunteer for that status change.

You are correct, let me rephrase. There was one new hire that would have been awarded ANC, however he got a call from the company before the award was final and asked if he actually wanted the base or if he could be convinced to take a different one (MFR).

That's weird. I wonder why they called him instead of giving him the next available base on his bid?

At my interview they mentioned Alaska may want Horizon to fly larger jets in the future since Alaska pilots apparently don't have scope.
I'm not flying heavier metal for peanuts, is there anything to this or just something they say to trigger SJS in new applicants?

The sad part is this: The rates that we have negotiated for a larger airplane aren't terrible. They're not JetBlue E190 quality, but they're not Mesa -900 or RAH 190 rates either. Top out for an FO would be about 60 bucks, and a Captain would reach 144.
There's zero chance of us flying those airplanes at those rates, though. Management would approach us with an offer to take the new jets for a lesser rate, and all of the senior people would swallow that thing whole. Yes, I said senior. It wouldn't be the junior people who would sell us out. I see many senior Captains staring lustfully across the ramp at the SkyWest CRJ-700's they used to fly, and they're still bitter about them being taken away. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "Man, back when we flew jets..."
It's the most backward thing I've ever seen in aviation. Everyone here who's under 35 or so wants to hold the line, and not fly anything bigger. A good quantity of the people over 55 have SJS so bad that they can't see straight.
