By the time you taxi all the way around the airport to the gate, the passengers deplane, you terminate the airplane, do the hike to customs, miss the first van, wait a half-hour for the second one, and then take a van that leaves too early the next day, you're at the hotel for maybe 8 hours, so hopefully you can shower, shave, eat, and dress at the same time.

They already gave away larger jets to another carrier. Skywest starts flying E175s in July for Alaska. Alaska pilots seem pretty quiet about it. They had the chance to vote in scope and caved for more money and merger protection. If ALPA really gave two ****s about keeping it in house they would have secured it. If larger jets get outsourced, it is Alaskas' pilots fault. You as a group voted yes.

While I would love to see more Alaska pilots flying these routes with AAG-owned airplanes, I think it's rather narrow-minded for us as a pilot group to say, "if I can't fly it, no one can!" There's revenue out there and the company is going for it. If it increases profits, shores up paying passengers, boosts the company's position, then that's good enough for me. This is not a matter of SkyWest "taking" Alaska or Horizon jobs. These are new routes and the current fleet and pilot group at Alaska are tapped out to the max. They're training new pilots as fast as the oh-so-encumbered training program can and we're getting new jets as they come available from Boeing.
Alaska is not interested in buying any other fleet type. They're sold on the one fleet-type concept.

This from a Skywest pilot? Care to explain your reasoning? This is flying that should be at mainline.

SkyWest to fly E175s for Alaska, Gets 12 PCL CR2s | Jetcareers
My reasoning was really just based on the AS pilots point of view that they're currently tapped out, and really all contracting out the E175 flying to another partner does is allow Alaska to turn more profit allowing AAG pilots to enjoy their pay, and allowing AS's route structure to grow. That was one thought process. I'm simply playing devil's advocate here citing a quote from an AS employee. Take what you will from it. I recognize the tension, and need to prevent the industry from being eroded by regionals taking mainline flying which would make mainline airlines become a shell of their former selves.

That was from an AS (Alaska Airlines) pilot. Here's a direct link to a thread discussing the issue on the other site.

Can anyone tell me if you need 1500 hours before applying? Or is Horizon like many of the others, where you can apply early and get hired around 1475? Also, what's the word on upgrade times.. Are they dropping like the rest? I'm at 1410 and getting antsy. QX is definitely my number 1 choice.

The most recent captain I'm seeing listed is shown as a November 06 hire, but they're only 46 numbers (maybe a year) from the hire date dropping to early 2011. That said, there are still about 25 people senior to that person deferring upgrades for various reasons (probably avoiding ANC), so the upgrade will take a bit longer to make the big drop.
This is yet another example why chasing the upgrade is a bad strategy. When I was hired, I ignored upgrade time completely. It was 12 years, and rising. I'm probably going to upgrade in just under 4. Meanwhile, I've been based at home and having some of the better pay and benefits in the industry. Just saying... haha.
