I’ve flown 300 hours here. Reserve is 4 hours of credit per day unless you get assigned a lot of flying. So if you fly 5 hours on a reserve day you’ll get paid 5.

I’ll be honest, if you’re ambitious and wanting to build time ASAP, SEA based Q400 isn’t something I recommend.
i am more interested in e175 I hope somebody else can chime in as well. That reserve time is too long and I definitely want to fly as much as I can.

I love flying the Q, but if you want Seattle you want the jet.

Default Spokane Q Qs

Hello,

I’m very interested in living in Spokane and I know it’s only a Q base. I have some Qs about the Q.
-If I started in the next couple of months, how long would it take to get based in GEG?
-What is reserve life like in GEG, are you used a lot?
-Once you’re holding a line, is it easy to trade trips in GEG?
-I was told training was 3 months. Any recent hires that could tell me what it’s like? Home on weekends? Any breaks? Or nonstop 3 months?

I'm nowhere near being a new-hire, but I can pass along what some of the FO's have told me:

(1) Your chances of getting Spokane right out of training are pretty good.
(2) We've had a lot of attrition lately, so the reserve coverage is low and decreasing. Expect to get used A LOT.
(3) Spokane is one of the smaller bases, so trip trades will be difficult. I'm in Portland and I can't trade or drop anything. There may be opportunities to pick up open time (frequently offered at 150%).
(4) Training is NORMALLY about three months. Ground school is typically Monday through Friday. The sim could be literally ANYTIME, including the "coveted" 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. time slot. There will likely be a delay between the sim and IOE. I've heard that our check airmen are pretty backed up right now, and some pilots are reporting a 4 - 6 week delay between the simulator and their first IOE trip. One upgrade trainee I know is using his break time to visit some relatives in Hawaii.

Default Interview next month with Horizon

Hello.

I have an interview with Horizon next month. They will give you the choice of the Q400 or the E175? My wife has a great job in Seattle, so moving is not an option. Which plane is more likely to get me a SEA base? I have no 121 experience, and don’t know any of the jargon, so please don’t use abbreviations in your answers. Thank you!

They used to let you choose, not sure if that has changed or not. I’m guessing you can still choose though.

The jet. Currently there are about 10 lines of Q flying out of Seattle versus 50 lines of jet flying. Prior to being so short staffed, we would have over 100 lines of jet flying out of Seattle during the busy months. It is possible that by the time you get hired, Anchorage becomes a junior base for the jet, in which case you would have to commute to Anchorage for a short time until being able to hold Seattle. I think this is unlikely, but still a possibility. Shouldn’t change your mind on which aircraft to take though, you want the jet.

For February, it looks like the most junior SEA FO line holder on the jet was a November 2020 hire date. So they probably spent about 8-9 months on reserve, which is fairly average I would say. I would expect these times to come down as summer approaches, assuming flying and staffing increase.

Are those jet lines just with Horizon? I know there were trips contracted out to Skywest. Still true? Not part of the lines you are quoting?

Yes that’s just Horizon flying I was speaking of. SkyWest does a bunch of flying for Alaska, just like Horizon does. But those lines I spoke of are all Horizon.
