One of the big problems with staffing in the E175 is that many of the senior captains and check airmen are commuters. A lot of these guys would be happy to cover a turn, but they're in the wrong place to do it and Crew Scheduling doesn't have time to deadhead them to Seattle. It also seems strange that we've only got four available reserves out of a contingent of 90 E175 pilots. Poor planning?
Naturally, I let the scheduling call go to voicemail. I don't mind helping out when I am free, but with the recent spike in short staffing, I just don't want to risk getting tagged with a multi day trip after "helping out" on a single turn trip.

After further investigation, the FLICA E175 CA numbers include the PDX satellite base. There are about 40 captains there. 90ish in SEA. The rest are management, training peeps and upgrades in progress. but yes, it is strange to see our E175 CA reserve list go from a regular 10-15 per day to barely 3 or 4.

Throw in the government shutdown and inability to conduct Fed rides for upcoming captain upgrades/transitions (and check pilots)...... all airlines will suffer. #murica

I dont know if the jet is setup the same as the Q at the moment, but there are Check pilots that can do the fed ride.

The DPE can issue a temporary type rating certificate good for 120 days.

That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the fed observation ride required for Captains.

Yeah, that doesn’t HAVE to be with a Fed. Your APDs can do those as well. Unless the Feds are trying to make a point and telling the APDs not to. Which is entirely possible right now.

Haven't heard of any disruptions taking place.

There are a few new Line Check Pilots on the ERJ side waiting for a Fed which is required for their initial observation. Though, it's not super critical as there are enough LCPs..... for now.
If the seniority list is accurate, we have 4 APDs on the ERJ side (only 2 on the Q). A few recently left for the mothership.

I have a guy waiting to get signed off as a Line Check Airman. No Fed to do it and our APD is busy elsewhere. That's causing an IOE backup.

There is a waiver the for the Chief Check Pilot to do FAA observation rides (mine was done by the former, former, former Chief Check Pilot).

Buuuuutttttt...the FAA has to sign it, no one at home for the FAA = no FAA observation.

I only know this because I had a captain upgrade get his FAA observation ride cancelled, and there was nothing that could be done.

They're gonna have to get APDs to do it then. Take 2 captain upgrades for each turn and have them each fly one leg. Lineholders will probably have their trips bought for operational necessity
